What's up with senior associate gunners? Does joining and signing up for everything really make a difference in making partner? I'm a senior, too, but I'm way too busy with work and business development to do extra nonbillable work.

You sound like the gunner, bro. Call is coming from inside the house.

Conferences, planning events, speaking engagements. I'm told to do this stuff, probably because I wasn't doing enough. Like I wasn't doing anything but client work as a midlevel.

Ok. Cool humble brag about BD.

It is against my will that I'm doing BD. I legitimately don't know how someone is doing more than this.

Depends what you want long term. Many firms won’t give you a serious look for partnership if you’re not also actively participating in “firm life”. If you just want to keep your head down and work and then go in house or something, what you’re doing is more than enough. If you’re trying for partnership, you probably should figure out how to work in committee work, mentorship, etc.

I don't really want to be partner, but I'm close enough that I don't want to close the door if I haven't found something else by then. I care about my family way more than my career, so I do what I have to and no more.

In a nutshell, yes.

Was told by my partners at the end of last year that I need to be more a team player and participate in firm committees i.e. DEI panels, planning associate social events, participating in firm mentorship programmes...

Many with kids live on the same street as their ex wives so they can be close to their child. I'm not comfortable dating guys like that. On the flip side there are the ones that were never married, which by this age cont
