MBA 2019 here from a top-10 school. My thoughts:
If you are looking for a 1-2 year break, a change of career, creating a strong network and friends, or going through a (pretty great) personal transformation, there is nothing better than an MBA.
However, IMHO, it feels like the huge cost of an MBA is now less and less justified (than it was before) with the average return that the market can offer today. If you are looking for a salary boost, I think there are way better options.
SEM1: but I also consistently hear that certificates means nothing. What’s your take on this?

As an MBA grad from a top 10 global MBA, I agree with SEM1. But would tend towards saying it’s not worth it. They’ve become way too expensive, and the traditional recruiting companies for generalist MBA grads have decreased their hiring as they seek more specialized grads. The ROI has become lower and harder to achieve.
I also agree with M2, Married But Available is definitely not a myth. I have trust issues coming out of my MBA 😂
MBAs are a credential. At least in my experience, MBAs serve as a way to open the door, not the means of securing the job. In general, specialized masters and MBAs target different labor markets but can serve as substitutes in some cases. The better question you should ask is:
- where are MBAs substitutes by other masters, and what’s the YOE equivalent substitute for both
- what labor markets do you want to target
- what would cause the value to increase or decrease in these markets, all things held constant
