When a small, locally owned business opens its doors, it does more than sell a product — it becomes part of the community’s ecosystem. It recycles money locally, creates jobs, and shapes the culture of the neighborhood.

But here’s the real question:

What should the role of a local business be in its community?

Is it enough to provide great service? Or do we expect local businesses to:
• Mentor the next generation?
• Hire from underserved groups?
• Invest in local events and causes?

I love this and I agree entirely. I married a small business owner (and have thus become one myself) and it's amazing how integrated you become in the community. We own a coffee shop by a state university and it's located in a neighborhood. 80% of our customers are repeat customers, people of all ages and backgrounds. It's really incredible to know people in our community so well

I think it grows and adapts over time. If you open your doors trying to be everything for everyone, it can be too much too soon. Do your thing, be a good human.

LinkedIn is a garbage app where I can’t even post my opinion or experience because it will go against the mainstream ideologies. If I even “like” a post then I worry that my peers and managers see what I like and suddenly I need inclusivity training. What a load of shit! You can’t be who you truly are on that app. Which is why I like fishbowl so much, the anonymity is a game changer. If LinkedIn was a anonymous, we’d see a lot more support for Kanye and a lot less LGBQT material. Bet!

Additional Posts in Startups and Entrepreneurship

I have a business idea in the VR/AR space utilizing AI. However, I lack skill sets to evaluate viability or to create an MVP. Neither do I have a network to tap into.

My plan is taking classes to deepen my knowledge while joining and actively participating in communities to find collaborators.

Does this approach make sense or do you recommend other approaches? If it makes sense, do you have any recommendations for classes or communities?

Look forward to hearing your experiences and wisdom!

Side hustle or startup ideas for someone who isn’t technical/doesn’t code? Where should I look or where to begin? I don’t have any strong passions or specific skills that I’m confident in. What books, articles, blogs, orgs, events, people I should follow for inspiration that has helped you? I have some cash to invest and am looking for a part time hustle that can cash flow at least a little bit of money on the side.

Friends, need some feedback on an idea:

I’m thinking of starting a podcast interviewing leaders at startups about their experience with specific challenges - I know, cliche, get a more original hobby, etc.

Not looking for the narrative arc of How I Built This or Masters of Scale. Instead, looking to uncover specific problems faced by companies that tried something new for the first time. What did they not see coming, how did they adapt and measure, etc.

What are your thoughts on this format?

Really confused as to whether to incorporate my NY- based makeup startup as an LLC or an S-corp? Not based in NYC if that matters and no revenue yet. Should I be looking into Delaware at all (specifically a Delaware C-Corp) if I do plan on raising capital at some point down the line? Also - for any FDA lawyers out there, what is the problem with developing makeup (specifically foundations) with SPF? I've heard it's "heavily regulated." What do I need to be aware of? Thanks in advance !!

How do you pick a startup to work for? How do you make the bet it’s going to grow or fail? I’m told I should pursue startups but I’m admittedly nervous about getting hired to one that fails and being jobless. I’ve worked for big companies that don’t grow or fail rapidly - it’s all pretty steady.

I have started a side hustle with two friends. It's Climate Tech related. We have been working with it for the past year as a part-time hustle. We want to take it to the next stage.

My two other friends have a background in consultancy and one of them had a mentor who is really high up at a Big4. He would like to join the start up as a Partner. He seems really experienced and could help raising money, although he does not seem to care about climate change.

What would be a good offer?
