His goal is to pivot to PE S&O eventually.

I actually recommend against opting into comfort+ upgrades. I thought it was a great idea until the week i managed to snag 3 exit row, double leg room seats (the one where there's no seat in front of you) and on all 3 flights I got "upgraded" to comfort+ middle seats. I've never been upgraded to an aisle or window c+ seat.
You can set preferences to not upgrade you to middle in C+.
Silver gets you nothing, especially on major routes
Do make sure you indicate you want Comfort+ upgrades before you do any check in (do it when your flight is booked). Delta does not automatically upgrade to Comfort+ (there is a way to set this up in your preferences so they do for you, but it has been so long since I set mine up, I forgot how). Note once you do your check in, you can not add your name to the upgrade list.
You may get lucky on silver. I was upgraded three times to first class this summer. Twice were on international flights.
In other words, you are eligible for upgrades at silver but likely won’t get much until gold.
Those don’t quite count, even though you’re technically correct. Maybe if they had lay flat seats or were 5+ hour flights.
You can get upgraded to comfort + on long haul international though, and I think Premier Economy or whatever it is on the newest planes.
