Wait until you get the offer, not before
OP, yep - typically HR or Hiring Manager will call you after and make a verbal offer along with a number. They will also expect that you would want some time to think over it. Write down details when you get the phone call, thank them, express excitement about the opportunity to work with them, and ask them for some time to think over it and discuss with family. Then you go back for negotiation.
Was given a ballpark number yesterday and basically told I had the job
Lulled into false sense of security are we? It's not yours until there's an offer - and you're not going until you accept..... keep your wits about you and good luck!
Guys, I know I don't have a formal offer yet, I know I still need to do well. The question is when does salary negotiation happen? Should I be prepared for it at the end of an interview? Does HR usually call later and it's discussed then? How does it work?
U have the power when they bring u an offer, don't bring it up until then
negotiate after the offer.
Congrats. For my move to Accenture, I knew the range while interviewing and was then presented a package. I tried to negotiate. They upped my signing bonus, but did not / said they could not change the (bit low) salary offer.
Sounds more like the people that actually know whether you will fit or not are going to decide whether you fit or not
Depends on who you're interviewing with. Usually once you have an offer in hand.
Wait for the offer. The offer comes with a salary. Write/call back saying you're really excited about the offer and agree it's a great area for but you were hoping the salary was ~10-15k more
And, go kill it homeboy/girl! All the best!
Level? How long in current position?
Thanks AC1, very helpful.

Congrats OP! Are you headed to industry or Big 4?
Industry if I take it
I just moved into industry and definitely had comp conversations (at a bunch of places) before getting an offer. Really helped to be able to quote comp at other places I was interviewing, and I phrased convo as just wanting to be in ballpark with others. Charles aris study is also helpful to point out market comp
