I travel for work and dine solo often. It’s always less awkward if I can find a place to sit and eat at the bar rather than a table.
Yea I always try and sit at the bar too.
Also, room service is a great option for dining solo. You can eat in your jammies!
I travel solo for work and pleasure. Agree it can be awkward eating out by yourself. I tend to do fast casual or eat at a park for dinner. I often make my main meal at a breakfast or later lunch so it is not as awkward for me. The other thing is I eat at a bar and find myself chatting with random people. People are more approachable as solo visitors.
This may not work for you.
I think dining solo is like any other skill, practice makes you more comfortable. A long time ago I asked why I felt like I should stay in my hotel having room service or sit hidden in the back corner of a restaurant just because I'm alone. I was missing out on so much!
I gave myself the challenge of becoming comfortable with dining alone and so I'd choose a nice restaurant, order a great meal and a glass of champagne or wine and I would just sit. No book, no phone, no distractions - and just observe what was going on around me. I practiced being in the moment, with myself and my thoughts. I savoured my drink, the food and the time alone.
I now LOVE taking myself out for a nice meal and I've had some great experiences because of this. I see so many random things happen that nobody else sees because they are tied up in conversation. I have had lots of great conversations with waitstaff and on many occasions, I've been offered a second glass of whatever I'm drinking 'on the house'. It's still seemingly a novelty for a woman to be dining alone - people are fascinated by it for some reason. I've had more than a few waiters slip me their phone number or offer to be my tour guide - this is flattering and makes me chuckle each time. Mostly people are just really kind and attentive and want to make you feel comfortable.
I've struck up conversations with the diners around me, been invited to join their table and met cool people who have then taken me out on the town in the place I'm travelling. I've had people share their wine with me and even buy me dinner. I once met a Theatre owner and the artist doing a one-man show and they invited me to join them and their daughters for dinner and later, to attend the production.
My most memorable solo dining experience was at a degustation restaurant in Prague. It turned out I was the only client for the whole evening. I had the restaurant to myself! Two chefs in the kitchen, the waiter and the owner - with whom I spent much of the evening discussing our best food experiences around the world. I felt like a famous person.
I will never let a restaurant seat me in a shitty spot - I justify that I'm alone so I want a seat where I can see the street, the room and watch the world go by. I purposely pick higher end restaurants because they tend to treat solo diners a little better and I like to treat myself.
So I say - find a restaurant that you like the look of, take a deep breath, relax and enjoy the experiences that come your way because you were brave!
I recommend listening to a Spotify podcast or audiobook you’re interested in. I also look for casual spots or order at the counter options. Do you have any upcoming trips?

I choose the bar whenever available. If I’m not feeling the vibe I sometimes will sit for a drink, order the meal to go and take it back to my room.
Sometimes enjoying a meal with Apple TV is more comfortable than sitting in a stuffy restaurant anyway.
Have you tried to connect with other solo travelers through facebook etc? Just for a meal ?
