When switching careers, is it better to take a job that pays higher now or one with a lower salary that seems to have more potential for growth down the line?

It is better to take the job with higher pay now. Lower salary with potential for growth does not guarantee your salary will grow at the rate you expect it to trend.

Take the higher paid job to negotiate offer with the higher potential employer.

I wouldn’t be so definitive. Look at what the delta is now and look at the delta for a future base case. Is it 20k now vs 200k in the future? I’d opt for whichever has the highest ceiling.

That’s survivor bias, people who hop for small increase are the type who had limited upward trajectory at the previous firm to begin with, by not hopping they are capping themselves at an even lower level. The ones who can achieve desired progression (be it outstanding skill set, personality or social skill) would not be deterred by the fact they changed jobs a few times either.

Take the money and look for opportunities at the company too! I settled for a lower-paying role early career and regretted it.

Consider exploring other opportunities that may provide a higher rate of compensation. Additionally, consider ways to ensure your financial security in the long term, such as investing or creating a side hustle.

I don’t know whether I want to pursue Auditing or Tax. I’ve done 3 summer internships with Deloitte and am currently in a tax internship with a local boutique firm. I realized I hate doing individual returns and much rather work with financial statements. I’m not sure if this means Auditing would be a better fit for me because I enjoy analyzing and working within financials. I would honestly just pick the more financially rewarding career with better post-big 4 options. Any thoughts?

Hi guys, I’m debating switching careers. I’m currently a mortgage loan officer but I’m very interested in SE. My degree is in finance. There’s a coding bootcamp near me called Boca Code that’s supposed to be top notch. I’m curious for feedback on 1. Are coding bootcamps actually a way into the industry like they’re marketed? And 2. What is a realistic starting salary for entry level SE? I’ve read and been told 90k, but that seems high.

Left my first job after just shy of two years because I was bored. Have been at my current job for about half a year and it’s a great resume builder but an absolute horror story (long hours, unreasonable clients, tons of weekend work that’s not worth the pay). If I left in a few months, at the 10 month mark, would that significantly hurt my chances of getting a strong exit opportunity? I can’t imagine staying here for the full year but I don’t want to blow my chances at leaving for a cool job

I'm seriously contemplating taking a software development boot camp to make a career change. For those who hire new software developers, does it make you stand out if you get your certificate from a university instead of a coding academy (like coding dojo or something)?
