I think good is 20%, barely acceptable is 10%. If it’s under 10% it means a few things to me:
1. Your comp is already at a decent level. Maybe they hired you in at a good salary and they’re now looking at the salary bands to see where you fit with your peers.
2. Your company doesn’t value you as highly as they say they do. 10%? $5K on a $50K salary? $10K on a $100K salary. Less than this doesn’t feel like a real promotion to me.
3. They are counting on you taking less because they think they’re that special and you’re getting more than pay from the agency. Could be true. It’s your book.
4. You don’t fight hard enough for your pay bumps and they know it. Squeaky wheel, it’s a thing y’all.
5. They’re not doing well and there’s not any money to go around. Also a thing. Although, bosses probably still get their bonuses (often negotiated, see #4). Cause for concern if an uptick isn’t eminent.
I tell people all the time, a bad year is a tough time to ask for a big bump. Be mindful when the agency is doing well and definitely ask then. Way easier for me to get my CFO to approve a bump when we’re up 10%. Also, get sticky with clients and ask then. Leverage. It’s the first thing they ask when someone puts their notice in and they’re deciding on a counter...what’s our risk with client xx?

The % increase should be ideally over 7%; else it's too small to make it a true promotion. What's equally (if not more) important to is the new responsibility and growth you are exposed to.

10-15% for most single steps. You’ll get paid a mix of what they can and what you push for.
From PM-to-SPM, I was a 7%, and the justification was my PM salary was “at the far end of the stretch band” for my PM title. Needless to say, I found a new job in 3 months with the new title.
10% + internal. Unlikely to top 15% depends on your starting point. 20% if you are get a promo with a job change.
A good percentage? 20%. Realistic? Like 8%.

Thanks for all your respnses. I was thinking a 20% raise was a little low but at the same time probably not realistic. Sounds like anything over 10% may be a challenge...
From PM to SPM promotion at the same agency I got a 9% increase.
Standard yearly increase is 3%.
5% is consider above average. These are if you get an increase every year
10%
Usually it’s between 5-8.75%
I was offered 20% on a good year... negotiated to 40%. My base was high comparative to others.
Promoted again and got 25%.
I'm now leaving for another 40% bump.
Stop asking about % increase, start finding out your market value.
