This is me. I always get good feedback when it comes time for reviews, but I’m terrible at interviewing. Interviewers probably wonder how I got my position/stay employed.
It’s weird, I have no problems with other kinds of presentations (with clients or other advisors) even if they’re technical.
Personally I do very well in interviews. I’ve never not got a job I’ve applied for yet over a 20 year career in FS so far.
The secret? There is no secret, you just have to remember that the other person/persons in that room are human too.
They’re not generally looking to trip you up (there’s always an exception), they want to know more about you. Nobody is expected to be correct or know the answer 100% of the time and it is a test of character to see how you’ll react to questioning along those lines.
In the role I’m in now: I told the COO that I knew nothing of the platform I was being brought in to run, I hadn’t worked in that business line before, I was new to the bank and wasn’t familiar with their practises. I still got the job even though, on paper I wasn’t qualified. How? Well, I freely admitted I didn’t have the answers or details for those but demonstrated how I would fill those knowledge gaps or what I would do to solve those problems in a holistic sense.
If you can prove yourself adaptable and able to tell the story of how you’d do X without diving into detail - that is the key.
I am currently interviewing for an MD role elsewhere and, by following the above tactics, have been offered the role.
