When you're put on a PIP, how can you tell if it's something you can survive or if you should just quit?

Start looking for a new job and were you aware of your performance shortcomings? If this was a surprise document and then go back to your manager and tell them nothing had been discussed with you prior and this was a surprise. Make sure that if there have been meetings that have been documentedyou may not have a leg to stand on, but if this was truly a surprise, then I would go back and talk to your manager about it because it sounds like they missed steps.

I was on a pip and refused to let them win. I did not start looking for another job but I did put all my energy into correcting the situation. 5 years later I am still here and thriving in the same position

like

That’s a question to ask your manager.

But I’d start looking.

like

If they can you, will they pay severance?

like

And I agree with comment above- start looking for a new job.

With usaa, they actually do want ti help you. A pip is at least 90 days. And after that, it goes to a written, then a final. Meaning, you've got a good distance to find where the skills are abs the help you need. Reach out to the ask a co worker slack to see if someone can give you pointers on what small adjustments you can make to get off the pip

like

No, don’t ask a coworker. Ask your manager when you were put on the PIP you should’ve been given clear guidelines on what needs to turn around and there should be a 30/60 day action plan because if there’s nothing laid out, how do you get off of it?

That is a manager‘s duty. Now you can go get some tips from your coworkers, but I would advise you do not share that you were on a PIP, that is confidential information, if you share that you’ve put it in the public domain and that hurts your brand even more.

like

If it was something you couldnt fix or improve you wouldn't be on a PIP. they are used when your manager feels like you are capable of improving the behavior and gives you clear actionable steps to do so with consequences for not meeting the steps by certain deadlines. Talk to your manager about how to improve if you don't know how. Most managers don't want to fire you. They really want to see you succeed.

like

lol

These days, I’d be scared to quit unless I had a new job lined up and it looked solid.

If you do your best to meet the goals in the PIP you might keep your job. But even if you end up getting fired, I’d rather be fired for performance than be floating around looking for work for weeks or months with no financial support. In many states you can be fired for performance and still get UI. Check your state.

I just left a very toxic work place.
The crazy thing is they were just named the best local municipality to work for. It's upsetting. They advertise a "culture" but don'tapply it. How do I recover from this?

I am in a long distance relationship with someone who is currently in B school. He spends pretty much all his breaks and holidays traveling with his classmates. Most of the time I am fine. But for some important holidays and my birthday, I told him we should spend time together. He just said it’s more important for him to bond with his classmates and ignore my ask. It’s really disappointing and I don’t know what else to tell him. Is that a reasonable ask or am I being dramatic?
