Have this debate all the time. You also have to consider whether it's effecting your life at all. To me I don't consider it a problem until it starts creating problems, to some extent.
Having grown up with an alcoholic father, I think that the question you should ask is, "can I do without it"? I personally won't touch alcohol, but that's more from my background than anything else.
It's a good question and one I have asked myself many times. Is it the quantity or the frequency? I'd say more the latter followed by the former. Interested to hear other perspectives.
I come from a background of interacting with a lot of alcoholics. The way we identified wasn't just frequency/quantity but routine. Specifically, if one is drinking in the morning, that's a red light. Or in the afternoon without food or company. Having a few beers every evening is more of a grey area but I'd say if someone proposes not drinking one day and the proposal is met with resistance, then you're probably dealing with alcohol dependence.
Quantity (2/7 days week). The rationale is enjoying life while young, but at the same time, there is a line to be crossed at some point
@M&C1 With all due respect, "not considering it a problem until it creates a problem" generally means it's later than it should be. The aim should always be to prevent, not fix, dependence.
"Asking for a friend" means "asking for myself"
