My personal ranking (currently living in the Bay Area): 1a. Seattle — amazing access to nature, cool climate, existing friend/family base 1b. New York City — unparalleled density and variety of experiences 3a. Portland — kind of Seattle lite with less diversity 3b. San Diego — seemed like a nice city when I visited, although the weather drags it down a bit 3c. Denver — access to mountains is great but no large bodies of water and less diversity (the Asian food options are particularly lacking) 6a. Palo Alto — this would be higher if you expand it to include the City/rest of the Bay Area and if I don’t consider home ownership. Palo Alto is too suburban for me. 6b. Los Angeles — as much as I love this city for its incredible food, I can’t stand the necessity of cars, the traffic, and the heat. I have friends here I’ve never met up with because in the time it takes to drive from the LAX area to SGV I could fly back to SFO 8. Miami — I prefer bars > clubs, mountains and rocky shorelines over sandy beaches, cold over hot... so this is just a fundamental mismatch

I’m west coast, spent my whole life going between Seattle and Portland. Washington - has no income tax out of your paycheck, but anywhere near Seattle it’s 1 million for a house, food is expensive, sales tax makes everything expensive, jobs are plentiful, most of the state is beautiful, if 45 degrees and rain negatively affects you, you might wanna pick somewhere else. We get 2-3 months of summer and those months you can’t beat the PNW. Oregon- Expect about 10% extra taken from your check, but no sales tax. Or none that you notice. It’s built into the prices for gas, cigs, alcohol. Items in stores are quite a bit cheaper in Oregon. House prices are reasonable, not cheap. You can get something decent in the suburbs for 450k range. Salaries tend to be less, but it’s also way cheaper than Cali or washington. Hybrid strategy - establish residency in Washington, base your pay check from Washington. Then travel to Oregon to buy everything. I’ve had houses on both sides of the border at the same time and used it to my advantage. No sales tax on one side, no income tax on the other. It’s easy to maintain residency in Washington. It pisses off Washington, but the whole state does it. If I had to pick Seattle or Portland. Portland is way better. Seattle would be a closer option if they had affordable housing. Also Seattle loses for night life. I’m pretty sure the census isn’t correct. It’s like 80% guys in that area. It was shocking. I suspect it’s due to H1B visa that wouldn’t be included in the census.

Disappointed Chicago didn’t make the cut 😔

like

Chicago is easily in the top half of this list. Food, night life, and theaters alone it’s top three or four on this list for each. It’s also significantly cheaper then the ones that would be above in each category. Can’t argue with weather or O’Hare though

like

San Diego or Seattle of the listed ones. But really it’s DC or SF/East Bay (Peninsula suckssss) for me.

D4- lmao I’ve met the least self-aware and vapid people in PA. Silicon Valley culture is elitist and not intersectional at all. Pretending that what they are doing it for the greater good of our lives and not because of how well it pitches to a VC is naive at best.

Denver is great and probably the most affordable on your list. Great weather and access to outdoors to boot

I need some inputs on if I should pursue a MBA. Goal that I would use MBA for is getting into VC, only a undergrad internship in that space, or doing a search fund and like micro PE. I would consider corporate VC too. Alternative is to focus on meetups to meet founders, getting a better job and hit the accredited investor status so I can invest with angels. Undergrad was a top business school, so I feel strong with finance and other functions.
