A life coach is just a therapist with no training
I am an ICF credentialed, certified professional coach. I am not a life coach as I focus on professional development and career related topics. Coaching is not therapy. People can and do have both a coach and a therapist. Coaches work under the assumption that their clients are creative, resourceful, and whole - and the focus is on uncovering blocks to progress, facilitating awareness and growth, and facilitating action. We sometimes say coaching focuses on the present and future while therapy focuses on the past, but that can be a bit reductive. I worked with a therapist who focused on past, present, and future in equal measure. As some have mentioned, therapists go through different and much more rigorous training and are equipped to help people with clinical issues. I am not and the code of ethics that I abide by states it's unethical for me to try to coach people through mental health issues. Last, you mentioned wanting advice, and an important note is that coaches do (or should) not give advice. We are objective thought partners, sounding boards, bullshit callers, dot connectors, accountability partners, and action planners. We help you solve problems by providing the space and structure and tools to figure out how to solve them yourself.

It depends on what you are working on. In my experience, a therapist is instrumental for deep understanding and emotional insights, especially to treat issues such as depression, anxiety, trauma, etc. A "life coach" - which anyone can claim to be - isn't going to heal per se, but put forth some kind of actionable "regimen" for improvement. Personally I'd go the route of a Cognitive Behavioral Therapist (CBT) before a life coach. Although the only therapy Ive done is what's described here as psychodynamic therapy - https://www.healthline.com/health/types-of-therapy (as well as working with psychiatrists and taking medication, I have mild to severe anxiety with depressive episodes)

All Iโm gonna say is that this account girl I worked with many years ago, after quitting advertising because it was not her jam, and then failing at an โinterior decoratingโ business, got divorced for the second time, moved abroad with her boyfriend leaving her daughter with her ex husband and now is a Life Coach.
Just make sure the life coach is accredited.
Neither. Make a friend and talk to them. Save your money.
Iโve used an executive/career coach and would say I found the experience helpful
