Is HARMAN really recruiting for permanent remote roles? Would they ask us to come to office after sometime? I am a bachelor woman supporting my sickly parents and can't move them out of city. And my city don't have harman office. HR did mention permanent remote, still want to confirm as I've heard many cases people were called back across different product based companies. Finally found THE one, after over a year of searching and trying out at least 5 different ones!
A nice comfortable office chair.
https://ergochair.co/collections/chairs/products/ergonomics-mesh-chair-w-adjustable-headrest-and-armrest?variant=32511617597491
My criteria: mesh seat and back, arms, headrest
I tried cheap ones from Amazon. Expensive, second hand gaming chairs. Tried HM Aeron (second hand) and while I didn't like the bulk and the general design, I was sold on the mesh seating. I wanted to get the ErgoChair 2 from autonomous, but it doesn't have mesh seat.
AMA.
anyone gonna buy any calls before market close?

Non compliance gives them another option for reducing workforce without compensation
Because better work is created this way. There are a lot of people that can’t manage themselves if left at home by themselves. When we go into the office I have control over my partners output because I’m managing what they do with their time. When they’re at home, 5 hours can go by and nothing happens. And that’s how crap work is created. Procrastination. Or maybe no self management. I don’t have the answer to that. Needless to say and finally the true answer: people can’t be trusted to work and manage themselves. And it screws over the ppl that can.
Then pay for the privilege You don’t though, which is why no one cares.
Control
Well the Employer is the Boss so they are in Control of the business and the employees do not dictate the terms of their employment as much. Let's face it, if you don't want that office job you are replaceable.
because they pay rent no one occupies
The REAL truth? Remember BEFORE COVID,
we were all 5 DAYS A WEEK IN THE F’ING OFFICE! We got spoiled working from home because of a pandemic. I love working from home. BUT! Hybrid is HEALTHIER than remote. Human interaction is important for a HUGE amount of reasons. Put down the phone down and get out there 😀
and YES! I may have smoked some weed tonight
I was 3-4 days in office before Covid
The bigger point that you’re missing is that you have a job. And the company gets to decide certain things. Like it’s in office policy. You can say that doesn’t work for you and leave. Or you can recognize that it’s not your decision and stay. Either way make a decision and stop whining. Do you know how many people who are out of work wish that they had your ‘problem’ of having to go into an office?
Speaking from experience working at Havas is not worth "having a job". Thoughts and prayers and all that.
A lot of larger companies get huge tax breaks to build offices that will stimulate the local economy. That doesn’t work if workers don’t come into the offices.
It’s also a control thing. Execs like to see working bodies.
I can’t speak to the size of tax breaks, but they have to be significant enough to warrant the policies!
Flip side. Are you inspired by anyone at the office? Do you respect anyone there? Do you believe in learning through watching or being in close proximity to those who are great at what they do? Not just on the call but in the prep or discussion about the work that’s not on the books. Do you ever crave the point of view of someone who’s not in your team but that you chat with in the kitchen and totally vibe with cause they’re smart and funny and they have lots of distance and perspective? These are all much better IRL experiences that serve both you and the company. Mandates make it feel icky but don’t pretend there’s nothing in it for you.
I promise you you won’t find the help you need at home. It might not be in your office or organization either. But it could be. You’ll never find out without going the distance… to the office.
My office is currently one day a week and I wish we went in more. The human interaction is great and I feel like the collaboration when working from home is lacking. I’m bad at procrastinating though so maybe it’s just me but I can stay focused longer at an office. Then switch it off much easier. I miss random creative jams you got to do with your friends at the office. lol holy shiii this makes me sound like a boot licker. Sorry 🫠
Cities give companies tax breaks for requiring employees to come in at least 3 days/week.
Got it. Thx.
It’s amazing that so many people these days can’t deal with the the fact that the company that is paying their salary and benefits has a right to tell them how they want you to work. Go figure!! THEY are paying YOU. If you don’t like it, become your own boss. Until then, stop the whining.
Yes, I know all of this. I’ve done it for 20 years, at every level. My point is that agencies have always had ALL the leverage while every perk has disappeared. The one perk we clawed back during the pandemic was not having to be there every day. So VP framing it as “it’s amazing that people can’t go into work” is DEEPLY disingenuous and probably coming from someone who isn’t asked to completely debase themselves as often as creatives are.
With all due respect, EP, you don’t have our hours either. Maybe you work the weekend on a pitch manifesto or have early shoot days. But you are not asked to come into the office, work all day, then come up with a campaign at night, then have it ripped apart again, rinse and repeat, for weeks. And you aren’t judged on nearly as subjective of terms as creatives are. You would not last in our job, trust me.
We often say that if we unionized and agencies needed to pay creatives per hour, the industry would collapse. That’s an indication of deep rot in the business model. You have no job without creatives like me, so kindly refrain from giving me the “put up or shut up” talk because you have not put up with nearly the amount of abuse an average creative has. “If you don’t like it, leave” is not a response, especially when it comes from someone at your level. All of you execs make agencies slower, more expensive and more old fashioned, so spare me the lecture about hard work.
I do get that agencies feel better work is made in person. But I have kids and I don’t miss losing 10 hours a week commuting. WFH is a priority for me and I’ve found a company where I can go in 2x a week, which feels like a good balance.
Funny I use to think the same way. Though we report to the office only 2 days a week now, I kind of like it. Don't get me wrong, I love working in my PJs but the level of distractions are tremendous. I'm running back & forth cleaning the kitchen, cooking, doing laundry etc. I literally stand in the middle of my Livingroom, looking around to see what has been neglected for so many months. At the office, I'm stationary. No running back & forth checking the bacon on the stove or watching to see FedEx, Amazon or UPS through the window dropping off packages, so I can run to the door and retrieve it. I know, it's sad! But that's my routine working from home. So, i don't mind the office visits.
Some big holding companies are basically REITs. They hold real estate and lease it to their agencies. They directly benefit from employees in their offices.
True but mostly it’s b/c the cities these agencies are in will only grant them huge tax breaks if they require employees RTO at least days a week b/c it drives more spending .
Well, maybe not full time. What bothers me is that I do more work in one day at home than I ever did at the office - even staying late until 1 am. Having said that, I do miss the human interaction. (Well, some of it.)
