McKinsey & Company I received an offer from McKinsey & Company in 2021 and I’ll be starting later this year after graduation. Obviously because of the pandemic, inflation is slowly trending upwards. Has anyone asked for a base salary increase before even starting the job? Any advice on how to approach this?

i feel like i see a fair amount of pmm roles on linkedin
I wouldn’t say it’s the slowness of the market. It’s more so that most companies don’t need many PMMs unless they are multinationals with big portfolio. Unlike PM or engineer, companies need several of them to build & dev.
Lots of factors:
- Uncertainty: Corporations are more risk averse. Also, trying to do more with less people. Short term profits are prioritized and have been for while
- Offshoring: Product management has been trickling over to India, Poland, and other countries where labor is cheaper. Product marketing has been starting to do the same.
- AI is having an impact. When agents are built and trained internally, they can produce great content. Content still needs human eyeballs, but AI can help hammer out some of the positioning and messaging work much quicker than we can.
- Overstaffing during the pandemic: There are more PMMs available in the US than there are jobs.
- Broken application system. HB1 applicants flood the system, even when job ads state "NO VISAS." Ruins it for everyone else.
Things are really, really slow and it is having a real impact on people's lives. Scary times. It's beginning to feel like a privilege to have a job. Current sentiment puts that squarely on you. (Not your fault. Legal, marketing, and finance - you're next.)
My two cents, for what it's worth.
The job market does feel tighter: product marketing spots are in demand, and turnover is low because these roles are strategic and highly valued. AI is definitely impacting the landscape—it's automating routine tasks, which means companies sometimes get by with leaner teams or blend roles (think product, content, and growth marketing merging into one). But, as you said, product storytelling crafting positioning that resonates emotionally with users is still tough for AI alone to master.
