By the time being a lawyer exposes you to the good alternatives, it's too late.

Tf else is there to do once you've put so much time and money into this career?

Platform and resources to do the work we want to do.
Opportunity to spend our workdays with brilliant, accomplished people.
No responsibility for infrastructure, which someone else handles.
Ability to to do high impact pro bono work that only biglaw can or will do.
Reputational support among people who don’t know us personally.

Status
Some people just really love it.
IDK, it's weird to me too, but look around your office. I guarantee you some of those partners are doing it for the love of the game.

I’m a transactional tax person and genuinely enjoy the practice of it. Obviously not a fan of having to turn something immediately and can get overwhelmingly burdensome from time to time but the work itself is super interesting and I get paid well to do it so why not keep doing it.
Agreed with A7. Also a tax attorney and support a very busy, demanding and preeminent practice. Tax does provide some insulation from craziness, but it is challenging in its own way. With that said, the work is interesting and sophisticated. Pay is great. Key is to not be passive about promotion!!!

At some point you just have to commit. Aligned with what AA1 said.
It’s not for me, but now that I am more senior I can see why someone would want to be a big law partner. Obviously, you need to have a certain personality, and enjoy your work to a certain extent, but you do get a lot of benefits, as T1 mentioned. Obviously, I think the overwhelming majority of people do for the money, but there is also the status aspect.
Financial security and job security. Grew up poor.
I feel like with some people their social/leisure life isn't really separate, so when they're out doing things for fun it's with people/in places that directly benefit their work. Going to dinners, conferences, etc.
It baffles me the amount of people who claim they do this only for money. yes big factor for me as well but why would you pick a career you’re not interested in? I don’t love the hours or every deal or workstream I do but on the whole I find it to be interesting work and it fits well within my skills set
It’s interesting, and it is fulfilling/meaningful to become very good at something

Compensation for being a short king/queen.
Sunk cost fallacy. Already spent too much time and energy giving your life to the job - why not go for gold?
The love of the game!

Eh. The game appeals to a small handful of people but it’s a tiny minority of biglaw partners and most of their colleagues know exactly who they are and think they are a$$holes.
