My students hate the bright lights and like my cave better. However, our district now makes us keep the lights on so I bought dark covers for the lights and it really is not stark bright anymore. Now the district is trying to take those away. Students hate the bright prison like lights and learn just fine in a cave or my muted lighting.
I have a desk lamp to light up anything that I need to
Natural light is healthier for students. Bright, white fluorescent lights can harm their mental health and focus, especially if they already struggle with these things. We turn the big lights on if they are needed, but not everything we do is on the desk.
Very good point!
We all have our preferences. If students aren’t complaining, that’s a sign the lighting doesn’t need to be any brighter. If the sun were out 24 hours a day, I wouldn’t turn on any lights at all.
Sometimes the students will ask that they lights go out. IMO its more soothing and less harsh on the eyes.
I am one of those teachers who uses string lights instead of fluorescent lighting. I have six double windows on one wall. The classroom receives plenty of natural light. When needed or on dark rainy days, I will use the overhead lighting. My students have never complained, and their behavior is manageable. A recent study examined a strong correlation between fluorescent lighting and hyperactivity.
I guess I wasn’t considering rooms with great sunlight
Sometimes having a classroom with decor that the students like/love especially for me with preschool, it gives them more ownership over the space especially when it comes to keeping it tidy.
It makes sense in preschool!
Because the Millenials are the majority of the teacher workforce now and many have no backbone when it comes to the students.
I keep my lights off with the blinds open. If you can’t manage your classroom in different scenarios, not sure what you’re doing in the profession. 😀
Having the lights off makes me less energetic, but there are times my homeroom will have the classroom lights off and the fairy lights on when we just need to relax for a few minutes. I even have my blinds up because I love a bright classroom.
I become less energetic as well
I prefer the lights on. But my two partners next to me keep the lights dimmed and thats how they are. I could not do it
Certainly not for extended periods of time. But for a chill study/quiet time then maaaaybe
As someone who hates the class florescent lights, I love when they do the string lights. Most of the classes here have a wall of windows, or corner. I sub for associates in my kids schools and others here. With having blue Grey eyes, the florescent lights hit my eyes wrong and can give me headaches. Plus, if can be calming. There is usually string lights and some music while they are doing their personal work. What I have noticed is kids are quieter and listen better.
We do that and our class works just fine. If you can’t do it, keep your lights on.🤷🏽♂️
Neurodivergent students have a difficult time focusing with Fluorescent lighting. They make a horrible sound and are far too stark. Incandescent and natural lighting is much more inclusive and sensory friendly.
Depending on where you live, such as in San Diego, you can have the lights off and still receive an abundance of natural light coming through the windows. Having the lights off at certain times of the day can be really relaxing for the kids and help them focus better. In my opinion, this is particularly true in the afternoon when the sun is at its brightest, and San Diego enjoys a lot of sunshine. I appreciate your perspective, but this is just my experience living here.
