Why Google is so anti remote . I know collaboration is cool, but if I am good with remote work then what is the issue . Been mostly remote for past 6 years without issues .

Want me back in person? Onsite daycare. Don't pull me away from the person I LOVE just because you think I should be with people you want me to LIKE.

G9. You do realize it's a common perk in some other countries right?
Corporate policy in India, for example, allows you to cover your parents and your children under your health insurance. In the USA, it's only your children.
Things can be different. But not if folks refuse to think for a second while slogging it out on the hamster wheel. I'm not ungrateful for the other perks. They just don't add as much value as onsite daycare to me, specifically. Which leads me to believe that other parents might feel similarly.

Because we like people to work with each other in person in order to brain storm new ideas.

Also it's harder to poach someone when you have intangibles like food, amazing offices, massages, great people, endless toys, micro kitchens around, gyms, free parking, etc

They can go g13. It’s literally all the low performers who don’t care or work hard moaning about wanting to stay home.

That’s relative to your org and boss. My team is geographically dispersed, and our manager couldn’t care less where we’re at so long as we’re getting our work done and that it’s up to par.

I read somewhere companies like google offer a lot of benefits in-house like free food etc.. to keep their employees' lock-in. If we are working from home we would most likely see our return in terms of our salary, so if we get a better offer many would bail. If the employees get used to google's non monetary offerings, they would most likely be in their comfort zone without wanting to leave.

The one thing the leadership will never mention is that it has a lot to do with the massive real estate footprint that the company owns and how it has been an integral part of the strategy (pre-Covid mentality of recruiting/retention factor). They've probably invested much more than any other company in the Bay Area. Since those investments have already been and are going to be capitalized, it's something they really can't budge on.

Ironically, there are some that believe Google could be one of the only entities to be able to solve the homeless crisis if it gave up some of its real estate footprint and created programs for rehab and job readiness (lets say with that massive San Jose purchase?).

Let's not forget that your pay is called "compensation" for a reason. Google (like all employers) recognizes your time is valuable, and could otherwise be spent doing other things. So they compensate you

If going to a job that isn't in your home office feels that traumatic to you, maybe Google isn't where you want to land.

I recently got a role as SrPM in Google but couldn't start due to insistence I be in country for day 1. Impossible due to Covid restrictions and pleased to remote start. Very sad to not be able to join but also very surprised at the strictness of policy in these times and suspect there will be a bit of a brain drain as people begin to value the office environment less and collaboration tools eg VR get better.

To be fair, you can now apply to work remote depending on your role. And even before the pandemic, most product /tech teams were pretty flexible with people working from home when they want - a couple days a week was fairly normal. I don't see that changing once we RTO, but it's completely dependent on the team's culture. Google is big, but most product teams are smaller and operate with a lot of freedom and flexibility to keep their people happy!

As a manager in the business part of the company I see major down sides of WFH
-mental health issues stemming from daily repetitiveness and lack of direct people contact
-lower productivity, things are done slower, VCs take more effort to setup than walking to your colleague sitting next desk
-much lower creativity, most people find it very difficult to brainstorm ideas or strategize without a proper whiteboard and staring into the ceiling without feeling the awkward silence on vc
-difficult to maintain culture and in the end retain and hire people. VCs feel soulless hence mental switching costs to move between companies have been reduced.
Hybrid is the way to go imho

Really hoping to avoid judgment on this post. Has anyone had to sign up for government or state assistance after becoming unemployed? Was the process difficult? I have a young son who's at home with me all day right now and I'm looking for a job that I can work from home, but in the meantime we need to eat and I need to pay my rent. Thanks for any advice.

Current large firm has no office there but mentioned they can likely let me be there in a remote basis. How should a structural engineer with 2 and a half years of experience be earning?

Why do firms fire people with low but still profitable hours? Is it because firms know they could replace someone like me with an equivalent attorney who would bill more?
