I don’t know that it is the worst, but I think one could definitely argue that it is the hardest because as you said the buck stops with you professionally for partners, clients and your team. Plus a lot of SMs are also at the age where you go through a lot of changes in their personal lives - marriage, kids, etc. , so you really have to balance. Then you add the added pressure of deciding what is the next step. So a lot of pressure all around.
That’s how it went down for me. I would say my 2 years before I made partner and 2 years after I made Partner were the hardest.
Personally I think it’s one of the worst roles. You have to deliver like a partner to move up but still do the work and then some of a senior manager. Expect politics and people ready to stab you in the back. Expect the worst of all . Good luck trying to land a client and getting credit for it if you aren’t a partner . Expect to deal with the execution (crap) of an engagement as well.
