Jeez…they offered a rushed, poorly planned incentive (thrown together at the last minute, I’m guessing) for students in order to encourage positive behavior and then unfairly made it punitive- which will ultimately result in negative behavior. Admin needs a refresher course in Basic Education 101.
We have an administrator who would placate to the parents and somehow make everything the teachers’ fault. Some are just overpaid egomaniacs with a little power determined to use it. Perhaps for the few years they taught, but couldn’t control the students, so now they bully the teachers. Sometimes the administrators are as immature as the students, not considering feelings. We have one who actually said she enjoys firing people! She also said parents can talk to teachers any way they want because we teach in a public school. Not true!
I’m sorry that happened to your students! I’m sure morale hit an all time low. Some administrators earn a paycheck for a smidge of meddling and call it their vocation. Hang in there, friend
The same as talk up mental health, we are a team but when teachers are overwhelmed and stressed there is no empathy. There is no "Thank you"
And mind you, these are 9 year olds. They can't skip school on their own. If they missed school, it was because they were sick or their parents didn't take them. Either way, why would you publicly punish these kids? I still don't know what the admin was trying to teach them.
All they knew was that if anyone missed more than 2 days, they wouldn't be allowed to join the dance party. So, the principal went to each classroom and slowly named off each student to come line up in front of the classroom if they were going to get to go. After this long process, where kids had to wait to learn if they were going to get to dance, there were 2 to 3 students left sitting in their seats, with the rest of their classmates staring back at them. Can you imagine that feeling?
I have to ask. Why are teachers not standing up to admin? An admin would never do this to my students. What do I mean? I would have a private conversation with admin to talk about another approach and hopefully come to a civil agreement, if not, then admin cannot enter my classroom to upset my students.
I agree. These rules don’t leave room for individualization.
I would bring these issues to your local union (if you have one). Meet and confer would be a good place to iron these things out. If you don’t have meet and confer, set up a meeting with some teachers and your Super to discuss workplace morale.
Is this district wide or just your school?
So sorry for your 3rd graders who got left behind. I had 7th & 8th graders who chose to stay behind b/c their classmate friends had office referrals and or missing assignments making them ineligible for a PBIS reward trip and they didn’t want to go without them:(
My ceo suspends kids on the spot for advocating for themselves and then yells at us for showing any acts of kindness to the kids. They accused me of being friends with my students just bc I keep sweaters in my room for students to use bc my room gets super cold and students aren't allowed to wear hoodies. Said ceo also also escalates kids to the point of outburst and then suspends them for the reaction the adult caused. But when the teachers are threatened with physical violence or cussed out, we get blamed when we don't hold the kids accountable. When the write ups we're told to do garner no consequences from admin. So yes, they are bullies. They're in that position most of the time to be in charge bc they want power over ppl that can't fight back
Chief
That's kind of over the top... I agree. Maybe they just needed butts in seats so they could keep their jobs.
I have to say that it appears that admin didn't think this through. I don't know if it's bullying, but certainly not taking into account what happens in the lives of the student and what is often out of their control. What were the consequences if the students miss more than 2 days?
Sick kids at school make more sick kids. 🤦♀️
