Im not searching for a new job but an acquaintance reached out about a similar role at a similar energy company.Turns out 2 ppl threw my name in the hat. I looked into it and the position was posted 2 weeks ago.Their director wants to meet.I bet pay is one of the first things to be discussed so that no one’s time is wasted.Am I crazy for not wanting to entertain it for less than 20-25% base pay increase? Is it selfish to ask for more? I’m sure most salary conversations end in negotiation anyways?

I hear the hustle in this, and I respect it. But be careful, "money will come" isn’t always true unless you ask for it. I’ve worked with folks who were amazing but kept getting overlooked because they never pushed back on pay.
Agree with this!
I like the mindset that money isn't everything. But I still want money 😆 like most things, it's just a resource that can help you grow and make your life easier. If I have the choice between a high salary and a low salary, I'm taking a high salary every time. I would even take a boring job with lackluster educational opportunities but a high salary over a low-paying job with lots of learning potential.
i get this, but only if you building something on the side, otherwise that boring becomes reeaaalll boring
Why not ask for both? It isn’t one or the other
I had this mindset early in my career, it’s great for building the passion but i realised that I never learnt how to do salary negotiations. “The job seemed super fun so just pay me whatever, I want in” -> i soon realised that most companies lowball and expect you to negotiate. With that said, negotiating is an easier skill to learn, but will probably mean that you will need to switch companies to earn what you are worth
Nah, the companies can pay me my true value while I gain experience that will ultimately benefit them anyways.
Hmm I wish I could agree with you but in this economy sometimes you really do have to work for higher salary. Obviously if you are miserable in the role I wouldn't suggest keeping it for the money but if you can tolerate it then I would probably stay. Its great to get experience but at some point it does sort of become about the money.
