McKinsey & Company Would it be crazy to turn down McKinsey & Company to stay in Big4? Tech-focused role, minimal comp difference.

Your ability to freely use most of your waking hours is worth more than whatever you think McKinsey can offer you in the short- or long-term

Yes. The McK name opens a lot of doors for you

This lacks nuance

Making the jump often means restarting as an associate; in that case, the comparison of opportunities should be between level N at McKinsey and level N+1 or 2 at current company

MBB is a waste. I took a Big 4 role to focus my extra time on starting a business while working and I have substantially more free time and earn a healthy amount more than people ranks above me at MBB. Take a job with less pay and more free time to focus on how to make money for yourself instead of some partner who expects their ass kissed

How about leaving consulting and actually upgrading your life?

Is this quantum black? Because I was reached out by them and the answer is definitely no. It seemed like a back office/non client facing role

funnylike

May want to tell your recruiter that then haha

Context: I would need to relocate (likely out of state) and travel extensively (currently mostly remote). My take-home will likely go down due to increased COL. Main benefit would be McKinsey name more than anything.

MBB isn’t everything and there are some better opportunities out there for sure…big4 is not one of those opportunities.

Wow how is comp not that great? Doesn’t sound worth to leave other than for brand name.

like

Yeah if you’re at PwC or KPMG

I’d say yes unless you have an awesome network to stay at current firm? I switched from T2, AMA

I turned down an MBB offer to stay in B4, had weird feelings about it at the time but I don’t really regret it at the end of the day. My decision was based on the presence in the industry I work and I ultimately decided that with economic turbulence ahead, I’m probably better off in an established role where I am than trying to make a switch right now.

How is this a question?!?

Yes

Imo, no. Leave for industry lol

Depends what you mean tech focused role, is this internal T&D or client facing?

If T&D yes not much comp difference to your current, but better WLB.

If it's client facing (expert consulting) then you are probably going down a band in McKinsey, so it will be around the same to start with but will progress a lot faster than in Big4 and highest cap is much higher (all expertise tracks are now partner electable).

Client facing. I believe you’re right about down leveling.

I've become really jaded about consulting. I find all so often you need to tell the client what they want to hear to keep their business and I feel like so much of the what I recommend doesn't actually get implemented. I'm looking to make a career switch so I can both create and execute on my strategies. A product management path seems very promising for this.

Does anyone who switched from consulting to product management have any recommendations of h helpful PM books, courses, or programs?

Told a friend of mine in tech I was considering moving to BCG. He asked me if I would have to move to Boston.

I followed up by asking what he thought the top consulting firms were. "I'd guess PwC and then McKinsey are the best. I've also heard of KPMG, Deloitte, and Bain, but I don't know much about them."

Just a reminder that outside our bubble no-one really cares about firm prestige etc.
