Coming from MBB wouldn’t matter at all. In general, what matters is your level of experience, the market for your services, your quality of work and your internal network. You will be behind on internal network (and team) by making this move
The rest I expect is just like the rest of consulting, hours and travel are dependent on what projects you’re working on + the people / clients you’re working with. Would ask the hiring manager / team members for their thoughts
Don’t join EYP for WLB…bonuses have been light the last few years and I’ve been traveling like crazy. I’m Director level, so 6 years experience and looking to make a jump.
It doesn’t happen often. I’d recommend not doing it EYP is just as much of a sweat shop and slightly less pay and at partner it’s significantly less pay. The PPMDs will tell you it’s less stressful because they want to retain the talent, but it’s the same. Speaking with people that have worked at both, the ones that left for Bain fronEYP don’t see a big difference in WLB
I’ll second this opinion
Beside the funny face , any other adds to it ?
Hard to disclose P2 because it become quite limiting and points to certain groups . Would appreciate your overall perspective though
The business has been underperforming for the last 3 years. The backlog of SDs already in the system with relationships and a track record trying to get to MD is significant.
Thank you P1, this is helpful and I really appreciate you explaining the uphill side of it.
I’m an SD and regularly work 8-7, then 9-midnight, so about 70 hours per week. Sometimes asked to work over the weekend for proposals. Second earlier comment that last 3 years have been slower with less bonus. Big clogged up pipeline to MD. SD also very hard to make depending on practice. lower levels are easier to get promotions. Culture isn’t what it used to be.
Really helpful . Thank you for sharing this saved me a lot ( me be years of grief)
Rising Star
What’s the value prop of this move? Seems like a bad idea to me
Part of the reason for it is too many partners dilutes the partner profit pot and by extension, each partner's annual draw. By limiting the number of partners that are created, the pot gets bigger and so do the individual draws.
Pension is less of a factor since it was restructured around 2016 or 17, but if you were ppmd and vested prior to that.... You had it MADE in retirement.
Yeah. You’ll join and find out that they made a promise that screws over one of your colleagues that has been waiting. It’s a dog eat dog world at EYP
Thank you very much for sharing that D1, this is a good point. Yes EYP does have a lot if convoluted language and I figured that you realistically get part of it at least Y1 and Y2 .
What practice area?
Hard to disclose just to keep the post anonymous! Would love your thoughts on different practices ?
Nobody would be able to predict timing to MD or P.
WLB, hours are project dependent but on average better than McKinsey.
Nobody can predict it, but everytime a big firm makes a lateral hire at a senior level the sales pitch is MD (or partner) in 2-3 years
Because they know if they told you it's more like 5-6 if you do well then you'll take the industry role instead
