3 hour commute is a big no. Plus 4 kids, that’ll be tough unless you got help
Chief
I mean you either dont want biglaw hours/unpredictable lifestyle or you like it. There will always be a payout.
Enthusiast
I would say No. That commute is rough, esp with 4 kids. Also, hard to say if the pay cut would be a deciding factor b/c like another poster mentioned, going from BL to IHC usually requires a cut. But going from 400 to 200 is very different than 200 to 100.
(I know you said you are in BL, but not all large firms pay Cravath or Milbank scale and we need to stop acting like they all do LOL Ask the Associates at the cheap large firms lol)
Not for that offer. You can do better, even if it’s just the commute. 50% pay cut is standard if you’re moving from a mid/senior role paying 400-450j TC to a small entry-level IHC role (eg corporate counsel or SCC) paying 200-225k.
Moving from biglaw to in-house will typically involve a pay cut. It is the trade-off you get for: not billing hours, not working weekends, and not having to do rain making at the Partner level (an eventual expectation).
4 kids and a 50% salary cut is an absolutely not. Especially with that commute. Might as well spend 3 hours billing. I’d wait to find something better that would elevate your lifestyle, this isn’t it.
