Those who have returned to a law firm from being in-house - what was your experience like? If you hated a firm the first time, was it better the second time around? I swore I’d never go back, but seeing the newest round of BigLaw raises and salary increases I am genuinely considering it - I’m getting married and planning for kids shortly, and would like to buy a home in our HCOL city, and while I’m not starving on my in-house salary and am fairly frugal, I don’t feel like we have much cushion.

I went back to a law firm after an in-house gig. Made partner and then a year later returned to in-house. I think it depends on your situation and preference, but I learned that I prefer in-house.

I went back to the same firm because the prior in-house gig was not as advertised and the job security wasn’t there. The firm made me an income partner after a few years back but the work-life balance and the support just wasn’t there for my practice. I am now working primarily in an area of law that I really enjoy with less stress. Just something that I needed to do at this point in my life.

Have been considering the same thing.

Been there, done that. Can’t wait to get bacn in-house. It’s a thrill and you get a wide range of work. But The value proposition just isn’t there after you’re done accounting for hours.

More money, more diversity and volume of work. I’d gotten stagnate at a small business. It was the right move to make on paper, but in hindsight i probably would have stayed. I miss having uninterrupted vacation time!

Have this very same question!

I was in the 100s in house and 500s at a firm. I work a lot regardless or if I’m not I’m bored. So I’ll take the 500s

One of my junior associates recently resigned and I've been trying to make an exit myself for several months now. The job market has been really competitive but I am getting closer to getting a new job and moving on. The firm culture isn't great and work-life balance is non existent. My physical and mental health have been suffering, so I really don't think I could stay. How did you avoid the guilt trips from Partners/Senior staff trying to get you to stay?

Here is my dilemma: I was passed up for manager promo last year and rightfully so a lot of my feedback was definitely correlated to me not properly handing my symptoms causing a good bit of inconsistencies in my performance especially if I lacked interest. Additional Posts in In-House Counsel

I am already giving myself a crash course in public securities and corporate governance from my firm’s training materials and my cap markets partners, but I also wanted to poll the audience for other suggestions on how to become as prepared as possible for my new role please. Thanks in advance!

Salary check. I am currently an in house attorney. 12 YOE. Large company with great coworkers doing regulatory work for the insurance industry. Good work life balance. I live in a high COL city. Out of curiosity and to test the market, I interviewed at a FAANG. Did not get the job, but found out TC was 350k, significantly higher than my TC 230k. I thought I was compensated fairly, but would love to see your thoughts.
