Can’t you just get a credit card?
You don’t get United Gold with a credit card. It’s actually not that easy to get
No.
Really only get lounge access internationally that hasn’t been great lately anyways. Spend your money on an Amex plat, using all that money for nice meals in the airport or buying a nicer seat/cash business fare for one of those flights instead.
Only way I would even consider that spend is if it was looking at 1k even then would have to have trips planned ans know if my upgrades had shots on those routes.

I would spend the money getting an upgrade instead or a lounge pass
7-8X sounds like a lot but it isn’t because there are others who travel long distance twice a week eg 40 weeks x 2 = 80 flights per year
I see no real benefits between gold and silver tbh. If you fly 8 times upgrading to economy plus should be less than that unless its two people, but then if you have silver there's usually a spot or two open at check in for most flights I have seen, even out of ORD

Gold gets you free economy plus at booking whereas with silver you have to wait until check in, at which point they may be all gone already. Depending on the cost to pay for economy plus and how that’s worth to you, it may or may not be worth it. Plus an extra free checked bag.
