Would you take 58k hybrid 1-2 days in office per month OR 73k in office but 1.5 hrs trip per way?

Good God. I can’t imagine a 3 hour commute.

like

I live in houston and it’s spread out but still would not do it

like

Hybrid for now.. then keep actively looking for better opportunities. At least you won’t be drained from being physically in the office and commuting.

like

True enough.

So 3 hours of daily commute? That’s brutal. 58k hybrid also gives you flexibility to live in more affordable place? I’d take the lesser salary for that flexibility.

I’m thinking the same thing. The recruiter has positioned this as a junior qa analyst position. I have a little bit of experience with data analysis, Sql, tableau, rdbms, from my roles in sales, plus a Google DA cert. She’s saying that the cap is 62k, but bc don’t have QA experience I wouldn’t qualify for the max. I plan to renegotiate when I get a formal offer.

I have 3 more rounds of interviewing to go.

Would a recruiter lie about the maximum budget for the role?

Any pointers on when/how I should approach her about pay?

*I’m still applying elsewhere as well.

Hybrid

like

Neither
But honestly depends what state

like

I live in Chicago. The position is outside of Chicago.

Having done the commute in previous years and now WFH full time I can't ever imagine doing that drive again so I'd pick the hybrid. The extra money just isn't worth it for me. Other considerations are gas is very expensive where I live, plus other car wear and tear and I also tended to spend more eating out for lunch when in office. At home I'm not having to fill my tank as much and often eat leftovers for lunch so I save money there. It also probably depends on your stage of life. When I was commuting it was just me. I now have a family and wouldn't want to waste 3 hours a day away from them.

like

I agree.

I honestly would take the higher salary and get another job. And use the higher pay to negotiate at the new job. 3hr commute is rough and even for 58k that will quickly diminish with transportation expense and maintenance.

like

How much does the weekly/monthly commute cost?

like

Yeah. That’s a lot post taxes going into gas and miles on your car.

like

I was on the same boat between 70k and 90k. I took the 70k and am very comfortable

like

Comfort & freedom are really important.

like

Losing 3 hours of your day or 15 hours a week for 15k is not worth it. You could work a part time job closer to home for less hours and make close to 15K. For me, time is more valuable. If you REALLY need the money then you may consider moving close to the 73k location.

like

Totally true. It’s not worth it.

A 3 hour commute sounds absolutely awful. If you do that 5 days a week, you’d be spending 15 hours driving and that’s assuming you don’t hit heavy traffic or something. This also means you’d be driving probably somewhere between 500-800 miles per week equating at least 25k miles per year which will add up in expenses quickly.

Obviously gas mileage etc will depend on your vehicle but it does not seem worth it to me. Even more so than the mileage expense, would be the time. Almost 800 hours in ONE YEAR spent commuting is a no for me, personally.

like

Totally right. Plus the time it takes to prepare for work. Not worth it:

The gas expense would be insane.

like

1-2 days per month in the office. Yes, it’s located near O’Hare.

58k, that 1.5 hour trip is probably gonna cost you 12-15k Annually after taxes for transportation expenses alone plus your time just driving. Unless you make around 80k or higher, that opportunity would not break even financially with the 58k option

like

Can you use the higher offer to negotiate the hybrid offer. Might get a little more. If you haven’t tried it yet it could be worth a shot.

like

Play them against each other but don’t get greedy

like

Hybrid for sure. A 3 hour commute is taxing your time and gas too

like

Where did you land?

like

The hybrid role

58k hybrid

58k hybrid for sure

I have an offer and want to negotiate

I am thinking to negotiate to

2. home base salary and have my expenses paid for

I know that's depends on the amount I have to travel (and potentially stay) but at the moment this is unknown. Past 8 months was just twice a month + 2 nights stay.

The only thing I know is it won't be every week, the return trian ticket is about £80-100, depends I could plan ahead.

Learned I was making less than peers at other asset managers in NYC with less experience (14 years). Latest conversation was with HR about how they calculate salaries. I’ve been asked to provide examples how my role has changed since I started to justify the increase. Is this normal? Or is this just their way of denying my request?

Love my current IC role and manager, get to work on strategic transactions and closer to the business. If my goal is head of corp legal one day, should I suck it up and go for it? Thnx!
