In Michigan the commute would unavoidably be on roads that are icy and/or snowy for a significant number of drives.
It wouldn't just be the time, it would literally be the risk.
I’m feeling similarly even though we don’t have snow. The drivers are crazy and the road I have to take to commute is a windy mountain road infamous for crashes. (And it actually did get snow for the first time in decades this year!)
I found an hour long drive a very good way to decompress in the afternoon (when I drove by myself..not so much with kids) I could blast music and be fully present by the time I got home.
on the way to work and hour drive isnt as much fun though
I guess it depends on if you like to drive and if it is an area that has a lot of traffic or if you are not on busy roads
I made a 65 min commute for 10 years. It's rough. I lost 5 car windshields due to rock damage and went through three cars. Add in the cost of gas and it really started adding up. It also made it difficult to get to doctor appointments within office hours.
No way. Losing 2 hours of your life everyday, wear and tear on your car, gas, not to mention the toll it takes on your body. If you can live on 65k, stay where you are. imo
Not in Michigan winter lol. But whether other people would do it or not isn't really important. Make yourself a pro/con list. And think about if the extra money can free up any of your time and stress - of the trade off is worth it!
An hour commute really adds up and will most likely be spent in gas, increases in car insurance, and car maintenance. Is it possible to move closer?
I commuted an hour each way for 3 years and decided 45 minutes was the max once I moved closer. An hour was way too long and exhausting. Now my commute at a different job is 40 min and it’s doable but I would not go beyond it. I wish I was down the street and I know so many people who live in town with a commute of a few minutes. It makes things easier. I personally would not commute an hour each way again but everyone has their own point of what they feel is tolerable with driving.
The difference would more than make the costs if using an economy car. It comes down to if you can find ways to enjoy your commute. It does come down to preferences. If the drive would be a daily living hell, or if you see it as relax time to sit back and listen to podcasts and eBooks.
For me it’s a no brained I’m going for the 90k
Rising Star
For me, it would be the shorter commute. Two additional hours away from my family is not worth it to me.
I travel between schools and one of mine for 4 years was an hour away by rural Ohio roads. I was at that school for part of the day, either beginning the day there or ending it 3 days/week. It made for really long days either way. I was rarely on time in the mornings (teacher report time was 7:10) or I was missing stuff in the afternoons/evenings at home because I was still an hour away from where I lived. The district often delays or closes more than the districts that I live in so I would often be up and getting ready before the call. Now my commute is less than 15 minutes and I'm much happier. The wear and tear on my car, body, and family life is much less. I don't miss that commute at all!
Did anyone take into consideration the gas prices? You may be getting paid more after taxes, however you are paying more in gas, to fill your tank for the 2 hr round trip, 5 d a week commute.
It really depends on the situation. Do you have young children? A spouse? What is the current financial situation overall in your family?
I live in Iowa and have commuted to two schools that were 50 miles away, and two that were 35 minutes away. I really enjoy the drive time, except on bad roads, obviously. I listen to books on tape, podcasts, etc., unwind/or prep myself. I do a lot of lesson planning in my head. However, one school I hated being at, so I really resented the drive. Make your choice based on where you think you will be the happiest.
Yep the longer commute…just listen to audio books on your drive
No brainer! Beef up that retirement!
That's a pretty big salary difference. I usually don't like a long commute but $90k for sure would make it worth it
I would drive one hour for a $25,000 raise no questions asked. I have driven one hour for jobs before.
Definitely walking! The driving, gas, insurance, and general wellness for me is not worth the $$.
I worked at a job that was 35 miles away. It took about 50 minutes to get there on clear, non snowy roads when I lived in Wisconsin. These were back roads with farms on each side of the road. It took over an hour with snow. Roads were cleared quickly in Wisconsin, but you still had to drive slower to be safe. I had to get an oil change every 6 weeks. I needed tires much sooner. It was a good paying job. Then I switched jobs to one that was only a 15 minute drive from home and less money. I was home when my kids needed to be transported to and from after school activities. I enjoyed both jobs, but I enjoyed the shorter commute and the fewer car expenses much better.
I commute about an hour each way. Not for the money but for the job
