The issue is that a title change typically means extra work, and I don’t want to do extra work for the same pay. The only reason I would take it is so I could get a new job somewhere else.
That’s very true, if there’s no extra work tacked on I’m more than happy for a title change if the pay can’t change.
I'd be cautious about doing that, it sounds like a promotion in name only. And what usually happens is you have more work and the same salary but you're being paid the same. That's usually a bad deal, but I'm open to the idea that it could, in some circumstances, set you up for a better position going forward.
I think it could maybe be good if you’re looking to move in but doing more work for no extra pay is a slippery slope.
Not personally, it leads to extra work with little recognition. If you can see it getting you somewhere short-term though and you're genuiely promised a pay-rise (preferably backdated!) then maybe.
Yeah this seems to be the common opinion!
I’d only take the new higher position if it’s better pay-you’ll be working harder so surely you would!!
Yeah the pay really is the most important part isn’t it.
Probably. I don’t know how much extra work I’d be willing to take on, but sometimes the title bump is the thing you need on your résumé to get you to that better job.
If it’s not much extra work I could be willing if it would help me progress my career somewhere else.
