Congrats! I had a VERY similar experience. I was overwhelmed with self doubt. I can tell you this all turned on a dime when I found the right mentors and leaders to work with. Been having a blast ever since.
Congratulations and well done on hanging in there!
Issue I had was around driving clients to excel I need to develop a bit more aggressiveness in pushing my client.
I wasn’t having the type of coaching / counseling sessions I should have been. So, I started having tougher conversations with clients and learning to navigate them. These went well because I had built up significant goodwill.
Now, there were some reasons around my manager’s perception that were outside of my control, and I resolved to more clearly share these with my manager (in the end, this game is all about appearances for better or worse).
The above was the root of the performance issue. I fixed that, but what really turned it around for me was the clients. I was constantly busting my ass to make them look good. They would convey to my boss and their boss, who told my boss.
This is an easy business if you’re clients value you. Internal stuff is the hard part.
So great! Would love to hear what turned it around for you!
Congratulations OP! That’s an inspiring post. We need more posts like this. Good luck
Congrats! I had a similar experience as well as a staff. Was promoted to manager last year
OP, totally agree that the internal aspects of consulting can be more challenging than the client ones.
We all need to hear that at least a couple time in our careers. Thank you so much for taking the time to put this here.
Also, congrats!
Congratulations! Great to hear! The right mentors can make such a difference!
What was the issue and how have you developed since the discussion?
SM told me he wasn’t confident I could do the job and telling me well try again next week. I got overwhelmed I broke down and cried by myself in the conference room after cause I don’t even think I can do it.
C1 - sorry to hear that.
Here’s what I did: take the day and feel sorry for yourself. Your feelings are valid. Tomorrow, evaluate the truth: we’re you doing all you could to be successful? What could you change?
As far as what the SM said, “that’s just like, your opinion man.” Don’t let a manager who has no idea how to improve struggling employees dictate your narrative.
This is the start of your turnaround story. Remember this moment so you can tell others how you totally crushed it after a good conference room cry.
