Advice to young lawyers. Read a book. I saw the thread about savings and many young lawyers (20s and 30s) don’t know how to open up a brokerage account or invest in their 401k. I know they don’t teach personal finance in school (though they should!), but my advice is that you should go to your local library and read a book about the subject. You have the skills necessary but you must invest in yourself. No one will look out for you.
You’re constantly showing up for everyone else, but who’s showing up for you? I started an initiative to coach HR/people leaders because I know what it’s like to be doing all the things for everyone else with little support or focus on your own well-being, growth and development. It’s a lonely game! I’d be delighted to create the space to make you a priority. Would love to offer a free session, or simply connect: https://www.chrisrollins.me/peopleleaders.
Currently, I have an employee who is struggling. Missing deadlines, making false promises to clients etc. Recently, I sat in one of his development sessions with his manager, and I was shocked at how disengaged he was and how junior he actually vs what we pay him. After some further investigation, we are afraid he lied on his resume and how his experience. How do you go about a situation such as this? This is a first for me.
Can we stop attaching unpublished cases yet?
How would you answer a “Why X law firm over other magic circle law firms?” question in an interview?
I am a first year associate in Biglaw. I have been put on an improvement plan to increase my billable hours. My supervisors have commented that have not been getting work because I need to improve my efficiency. I am willing to do what it takes to improve but wonder how to improve my hours when no one seems willing to give me a second chance.
How much nonbillable time is too much? I’m a second associate at a midsized firm and I have 30-50 non billable hours each month. An associate at another firm told me this was really high. Thoughts?
Curious about non-US attorneys: are you working the crazy hour weeks most of us in the US do? Or are your weeks closer to 40 hours? I hear a lot about the working hour caps, vacation requirements, etc in Europe/Canada. Curious if that flows into legal practice... or if it gets ignored. To clarify—I’m talking about BigLaw. I’m sure there are smaller firms with reasonable hours, the same exists in the US.
Any foreign attorneys feeling lost while working towards their master’s of law in US and working towards getting bar admission? Being an Indian-trained attorney, I still await to sit for bar (this year delay pandemic) but always curious about how things turn out for other foreign attorneys here on F1 visa.
How many billable hours did you record in March? I had to get an early start on quarantine because a co-worker tested positive for COVID-19. So, I’ll start, 155.
Question- if someone sues you on state law claims. You want to then claim violation of a federal law in a counter claim can you remove to federal court without diversity of citizenship
I like the people I work with but hate my practice area. How do I walk away without burning bridges 😞
Haven’t heard from my supervising partner in about two weeks. Everyone else I know (outside of my firm) has had their SP reach out to them. Am I wrong for waiting to hear from her? I have work (cont.)
Theory: equity/managing partners are about to be vaccinated and as cases/deaths (rightfully/thankfully) plunge very quickly, we’ll be back in the office in no time
Has anyone ever transitioned from law to investment banking or a similar field? Looking for helpful advice for a new law grad seeking opportunities in IB.
I'm always in awe of how finite life really is and how we spend so much of it doing things that don't really matter.

How do you transition from big 4 consulting to big law? My clients are all funds, and I do international tax consulting. I have used my connections to refer me into probably 10 big law firms and it’s not working. One most recently came back and said they aren’t interested bc I have no law firm experience. How am I supposed to get it though? I can’t go to lower ranked firms bc my clients are all “big.” … any suggestions appreciated!
Ever feel like your client counter-part feels threatened by you? Doesn't really want me to own deliverables but insists I help with them instead. I'm consultant-level so I need to own some
Quoted $100-120K, 10% bonus, no RSU for Sales Strategy & Ops at Salesforce (4.5 YOE). Super lowball right?

What is the compensation band for a Manager at KPMG with the Advisory FSS with 16 years of Cloud Cyber Security and a DevSecOps background.
My parents are coming to visit for the first time since baby was born. We also have a toddler at home. Baby is 1 month old. They’ve each had the first vaccine a few days ago, so not fully vaccinated. They go to work which involves lots of strangers. Them to get tested before coming he said they will be with us for a full week. They are not, because face say that Hass should be reserved for those with symptoms. And the free tests are only for those with symptoms. This is so stressful and I feel so caught between my parents and my husband.
leaving firm after 10 months, signing bonus earned at 12 month date. Should I expect any forgiveness on any % of the bonus? Or is it standard to have to pay it fully back?
