I’ve done PI work my entire career for over 10 years. I’ve worked in state and federal courts and I’ve traveled around the country doing MDL work and bellwether trials. I’ve had a lot of success making the idiots I’ve worked for wealthy, but I’m still waiting for a moment where I enjoy what I’m doing. I feel stuck working in dysfunctional plaintiff firms/cultures. I hate this profession/career more and more each year. Has anybody been successful breaking off on their own in recent years? Advice?

Should I complain to a firm's HR if the interviewers laughed at my answer during an interview? Maybe it sounded scripted but it was still heartfelt and genuine: my immigration story and how that made me appreciate the rule of law. I said it soo many times during OCI's that maybe it eventually sounded robotic, but for the interviewers to laugh and one to say sarcastically "nice elevator pitch", I thought was rude. Thoughts?

How long and how “much” can a stub year coast through Big Law? What billables are considered “coasting”? 1 year? 2 years? 3 years? For perspective - at Vault 10 firm in NYC with no billable abs unassigned system.

I’ve been at a job for a few months and hate it - partners set unrealistic deadlines, micromanage, and create work that truly is not necessary/push urgency when there is no real urgency. I had other offers prior to accepting this job that may still be options, and going back to my old job (for a pay cut) might also be an option. I can’t tell if this is just burnout, growing pains, or just an untenable work environment. Would you ride it out for a year at new job or pursue other options? HELP!

I’ve made it 5+ years in a NY M&A practice and have consistent exceeding expectations reviews. I’ve had a few mental breakdowns because of work during this time, but thankfully made it through. I’ve been in a near constant depressive/anxious state for family reasons for the last year and half, and am soon having my first kid. Question for funds folks, since no one is around to answer any questions and I can't seem to find this answer anywhere. Why can't a placement agent combine or integrate the offering of interests in the sponsor's fund with the contemporaneous offering of interests in another fund? How many matters is typical for one associate to handle (BL lit)? I know it is group-specific, but just trying to get a general idea. I’m a 2nd year and I am the only associate staffed on about 30 cases-meaning I keep track of all deadlines, do all day to day assignments, keep on top of following up with client/OC, and all research/drafting. Partners handle deps/court but that is about it. Is this a normal case load to be responsible for as a jr? I being dramatic by thinking this is too much?

I’m have a new theory about why juniors always feel like idiots and wanted to see if anyone else thinks this makes sense. I’m a third year, and am the most junior person all of my teams (generally me, a senior or two, and a partner or two), and I always feel like I’m messing something up. Is this just because I never get to work with other juniors and don’t see the mistakes they make, and that it’s relatively normal? And FWIW I went to HYS and I’ve had a clerkship so it’s not like I’m not smart

How many firms is too many? I’ve practiced 13 years. Since I was a 1st year associate, every 3 years or so I’ve been recruited for another opportunity that is hard to pass up. I’ve been at my current firm 3 years and got the call again, again about an opportunity that is hard to pass up. I don’t like having a reputation of a flight risk, but this keeps happening. Should I decline to pursue the opportunity just so I have a longer track record at my current firm? This will be my 4th if I move.

Is it important to tell recruiters your end goal when first reaching out? For example, I’m interested in switching from litigation to transactional, but my eventual goal is to go in house. Is that important to mention or precarious? Would recruiters have insight into the best way to make that goal happen?

Do partners sometimes say nice things about your work just to encourage you and less so because the work merits the compliment? Or is my impostor syndrome really messing with my head?

Anyone apply to clerkships after working at your firm for a while? Any advice? Currently a second year putting out applications

I am a mid level and have received an offer from a regional big law firm in a non-market paying location. I believe the firm would be a great fit and the location is where I want to be. The biggest issue is money. I’d be lateraling from full cravath in a major market and the initial offer I received is a bit off that (read: 50% salary reduction). While the market is cheaper in some respects, housing is not. How far can I expect this firm to go to in terms of compensation? Any negotiation tips?

Are any bankruptcy lawyers having to do work outside their practice area during these times? I have zero partner supervision and don’t know how to do like diligence for finance deals..
