I had a very drunk friend say he makes 400-500k a year in tech sales. He said sometimes his monthly commission is 45k. He said he’d get me a job as a sales engineer, which didn’t sound like a good job title. Sounds entry level. Then he said I could get you 300k base and it’s 70/30. So 300k is guaranteed, 30% commission. I’d do POC’s, architecture, technical conversations. So just under 400k is the expected salary. As an enterprise sales exec his base isn’t very high he’s like 50/50 and heavily relies on commission. I meet up with him in 2 weeks in person. I was kinda skeptical about the conversation, but did some research and those numbers seem plausible. I got that lead from an old friend on LinkedIn. Can anyone confirm if those numbers seem legit?
Depending on the company that so m definitely can be the sales engineer TC but I would be somewhat skeptical. The split is probably right in line however TCs for sales engineers I have send usually sit between 180-300. Definitely not 300k base.
I have a friend who makes 300k-400k in tech sales, but highly variable comp. His base is around 200k
I was a TAM (post sales for a while and my comp was nearly $245k a year. My pre sale SA easily cleared 300k on a good year. For 400k I’m assuming they’re at one of the big tech companies with heavy stock incentives.
Learn to sale and tell stories. Start making some cringe worthy psuedo-tech media that gets some SEO as an influencer. Then pitch yourself to be a pre-sales SA or SE and from there if you wanna go all in pivot and learn how to be a AM
OP asked for tips on getting to sales team. Not your personal opinion. I’m not in sales, but can appreciate such teams because why— you’re just a cost center in most cases if you arent in a revenue generating group such as consulting
