Ignore the trolls, they don’t understand empathy or caring about others beyond the self.
In a vacuum, I would take the risk and go if it was just me. It seems reasonably possible you could get it at that party, and if it was just about you, it would most likely be mild IF you got it at all.
But the context you shared about seeing elderly parents changes how I would think about it, because even if you didn’t get sick, you can’t know how it would affect them.
Just a thought, what would they say about it if you asked them?
Hi, trolls!
I’ve been cancelling plans with friends in crowded situations so I can spend time with elderly relatives this holiday and I think of it as kindness and respect to them. I can hang out my friends any time, and I do. But I don’t spend a lot of time with my elderly relatives and right now I really want them to feel safe, loved, and protected by their family. When I explain this to my friends they are incredibly supportive and so we have moved some events until after the older folks get together.
I only explain this so you can feel more comfortable knowing others are being cautious and making friend time work. Good luck and stay healthy!

Is it so fun to purposely be difficult? Obviously “postponing until after the busy holiday season where you will see many elder family members in close succession” != “postponing until covid disappears for good”. Minimizing risk isn’t the same as avoiding it altogether. Don’t know why you insist on taking what we’re saying to the extreme lol
If I were in your shoes, I wouldn’t go. You may end up getting it somewhere else and not from this party but if you were to go, and then you get sick, and then your elderly parents get sick, you’re immediately going to feel guilty about going to a large gathering indoors. So for your own sake, just don’t go, cause clearly you’re already concerned about it.
You are probably going to get it eventually and if you are boosted it will not be a big deal. You might as well go.
He__ no, do not go. My triple boosted son just got Covid due to a single work exposure. He was really ill for 5 days, still sick. His family got tested and moved to in-laws. It’s not about you. It’s about who YOU can make Sick and die. It’s not something to blow off!

Can you pass along the deets? I’ll go in your place.
If you go just get a COVID test a few days after. If it’s positive then obviously just cancel your plans to see anyone for the holidays. You just have to decide if going to this party is worth the risk of potentially missing out on holiday gatherings 🤷🏻♀️

So many people I know who are boosted are getting it, but thankfully the fallout hasn’t been anything even remotely close to those brainiacs who still refuse to get vaccinated. And I feel it’s only a matter of time until we all get it too.
However, I wouldn’t risk it with the holidays. Not only will you put elderly and toddler aged family members at risk, but why would you risk getting sick during a break? Get sick during work so you can take time off!
if you weren’t planning to see family, i would say you could go, knowing that there is indeed a chance you might get it (even if everyone tests negative that day before the party, there’s still a chance that someone is positive and isn’t yet in the window of time where the test picks up the infection). if you do intend to see elderly family, i personally wouldn’t risk it. protecting ourselves is really about protecting others.
Thanks for the genuine responses and great to know it’s not possible to have a normal conversation about risk without sarcasm and mockery. I’m not being alarmist in any way and have always taken a reasonable, not extreme, approach to prevention. I was curious to hear how people are approaching the uptick in NYC.
I was planning on hosting a holiday party with 30 people in my apartment tomorrow - that was until I saw the rise in omicron cases in NYC 2 days ago. I am boosted but know many of my friends are not / didn’t see the need to until recently. I canceled the party because I didn’t want to put anyone in your position. Do what’s best for you. Real friends won’t care and will respect your decision.
I am not doing anything that will endanger my parents and elderly family members. I can meet up and party after I spend time with my grandparents.
If I did something that ended up putting them in the hospital, or worse, I could never live with myself.
I’m skipping this stuff until after I see my grandma at Christmas. It’s not a worry about myself, but about her.
I just came back from nyc and I know 10+ of my friends who got it while I was there. I’m currently home suspecting that I have it too and frankly I wouldn’t risk it. Christmas is literally in a week and I care more about my family and wish I didn’t go…:(
I’d personally just skip it if you are planning to see your parents next week. I’m going to see my parents next week so I just cancelled plans this weekend. My friends totally understood and most of my friends if not all are cancelling too. Your friends will be there in January. If you don’t go see your parents, sure go right ahead, but just know right now there is a risk of catching it, then having to stay home until your negative
Omicron looks to be pretty mild. If that’s true, we should be shouting from the hilltops because pandemic is over. In full disclosure I was not super
conservative with Covid, but supported remote
work early on (still do actually), mask mandates indoors, vaccine mandates. Now I’m just like vaccination is a choice, and once you are vaxxed you are pretty safe. If folks want to stay unvaxxed and I pass it to them, that’s too bad but I’m not losing sleep over it. It will never be zero risk, but nothing is zero risk. Let’s move on. Hope you go and have fun at the party.
You could try to get a HC of who is boosted? And you can always wear a Kn95 or N95 and only lift your mask to eat or drink. I think others will take the hint and try to not get too close to you. And take a look at new guidance from CDC, I think there is new info regarding vaccine effectiveness for omicron

Went to a holiday party on Monday. Someone had Covid and didn’t know it. All of us are vaxxed and boosted. One person just tested positive and had mild symptoms. Two others have symptoms and are getting tested.
