I’ve always enjoyed working on multiple accounts. One big account is fun but it’s also nice to be able to switch gears for a few hours if you’re bored or tired of a client.
Pros of one account:
As the account person, you can really get engrained in your client’s account. You can spend a ton of time with them and they appreciate knowing you’re spending 100% of your time with them.
Pros of multiple accounts:
Like I said, you can change gears when you need to. You meet all sorts of different people and it can be nice to get a better idea of the type of clients you work best with. Plus sometimes, stuff you learn for one client can help influence something you’re doing or considering doing for another client.
I wouldn’t say it’s better or worse to have one account vs multiple accounts. It’s just different.
Sounds like a mess. Doesn’t this mean you’d likely be working under different people?
It really depends. It’s either an authentic evolution of the position that they are updating u on in real time, or a calculated bait and switch from the one sexy account they have that they know everyone wants to work on, to all the turds everyone avoids.
If the former, that’s fair. I wouldn’t let it stop u if u otherwise feel good about the agency, the people, and the opportunity.
If the latter, I would run as if from gunfire.
Just make sure you’re being compensated appropriately for the additional responsibility
I thought that was standard unless you have a big enough account to justify having a dedicated person
Before accepting get more details: level of work for the new accounts, will you have people reporting to you to assist. If the extra work merits negotiate more salary to compensate and request you have support. If you don’t get the right answers and feel you’re being compensated correctly the decline. This does happen and has happen to me and honestly i wish I would read between the lines to realize it is a bad agency and I should have run.
Thank you all! I think all in all I’m trying to read between the lines and see how good the agency is. I like the account that I interviewed with a lot, but the multiple accounts all seem to be launch brands.
In terms of the additional salary, how much can I typically ask for if it’s working on 2 teams vs. 1?
They need you to work on multiple accounts to justify your salary. Focus more on how you're split. 50/50? 70/30? Where should you expect to focus between account and how might they avoid big projects overlapping, making it a challenge to perform well or not work insane hours?
At AE level this is only going to work to your advantage. Perhaps more of a challenge? Might very well be. But fast track to logging experience in a way you wouldn’t always get.
