Can someone explain Wayfair? How do they have so much stuff? Where does it come from? How do you make decisions? It’s overwhelming and then I close the app.

Source: I used to work there. They have a category management team with hundreds to maybe even thousands of people whose job it is to work with suppliers to source goods for their given vertical (so imagine every team has its own category - lighting, patio furniture, cookware, etc.). As for the overwhelming part, I agree, the fact that there are so many options is a point of contention. It might seem even worse when you consider that Wayfair also runs the brands Joss & Main, AllModern, Birch Lane, and Perigold, all which have their own separate websites, but are run by the same company - each of these brands has their own “theme” which is reflected in the style of the furniture. Ultimately, Wayfair’s solution to this has been to make recommendations a lot smarter, basically feeding you products it will think you’ll like based on your browsing history, but yeah it can definitely be a lot (although, some may see the abundance of options as a potential pro). Basically what it comes down to is you making an informed decision based off of reviews/price, you also have to accept that you’re not going to be able to sort through EVERY option available. The way I would approach it is that you know that you’re going to find things you like, don’t worry about finding the PERFECT choice, but get a few good options and then decide between those 🙂

Yeah that’s a fair point, and I think any sort of e-commerce platform you aren’t going to know the quality of something when shopping online especially when you aren’t familiar with the brand, which at Wayfair there are thousands so it makes it a bit difficult. I guess you kinda just have to go with your gut and trust the reviews/your own research. Wayfair definitely isn’t for everyone and there’s still a lot of problems that it hasn’t solved, but I think there are definitely positives - lots of options to choose from, relatively affordable (a lot of diff price points to choose from), and maybe the most of all, free shipping over $35 which is pretty rare in the home goods business especially with the size of furniture

Funny you mention this, I was on Wayfair the other day looking for a particular item. Not only were there too many options, but some of them were the same thing but from different brands with wide range of prices. I gave up and ordered from Amazon. I will say their filter options are great.

You need to know what you’re getting into. The cheap, knockoff nature of the products (glomming into trends) means that quality can really suffer.

Thanks for this @Google. I did not know they owned Perigold.

Hello all, i have. A question regarding compensation for a lateral move. I just received a job offer for an UA position from a competing cyber insurance carrier for $70,000 + bonuses. Any tips for hard launching partners on social media? For context, I’ve (Indian American female) been dating my white American boyfriend for 3 years and we just got engaged after two years of convincing my parents.
