McKinsey & Company Has any industry experienced candidates pivot to MBB Engagement Manager before? My roommate works at FAANG as Senior Analyst (Ops, 6+ YOE) and was approached by McKinsey & Company recruiter for an EM role. He hasn’t done consulting before. Would this be too much of a risk? His goal is to pivot to PE S&O eventually.

^Not necessarily true. HR is a pain in the ass when I've tried to staff strategy analysts to MC roles.
I will have trouble when promotion comes if I am not charging strategy roles.
Ah sorry speaking from Deloitte perspective. I maintain a good tech network
I wouldn't worry about the short term. Focus more on where you want to take your career. If strategy helps you get there then make the switch. Particularly if you already have decent chargeability
Depends what kind of work you want to do. Strategy is a lot different from tech consulting. Do you really want to go there?
I wouldn't worry about the availability of roles; that's part of the business case. Strategy won't want to bring you into their headcount if they don't have a pipeline of work.
Just do it. If you don't get staffed you can do still do tech projects. I did a switch too and I don't regret one bit.
Yea Deloitte is a lot more forgiving on not taking roles that align to you. I'm in Tech and support mainly Strategy projects
Do it
Nothing is promised @OP. What is *your* plan? Don't make a plan solely based on anyone else, even that all-powerful MD ;-) - they could leave tomorrow.
How much work does MD have in pipeline? Have they been accessible and truly interested in your career? If they have lots of work and genuinely interested in you and your career, I'd so go for it. Good luck!
A1- that's not necessarily true right now. All strategy analysts were given permission to do MC or Digital projects if they want, given the bench
Switch, more money, more prestigious and better exit ops. Unless you have a really technical niche background in which case the tech exits are better. Do keep in mind that you have to rebuild your network from scratch though
I am a senior analyst so I am not 100% sure of what I want to do yet. I was on a strategy project for a while so my network is in strategy. I don't have a technical niche background either. I am more worried about being staffed and promoted. I don't want to set myself up for failure by switching into a group that is firing analysts.
Strategy is tough. Not sure it's a wise choice at lower levels where you are totally dependent on others to sell.
