ADHD and email are a nightmare combo. I either reply within 30 seconds or completely forget about the email within the hour. Big email threads are the worst—my brain just checks out as soon as I see too many replies. I've missed countless important updates because of this. It’s like my brain sees “long email thread” and shuts down. How do you all keep on top of communication at work without drowning in emails? Any systems or hacks that help you stay organized without getting overwhelmed?

Same. Email and group pings are a frustration of mine for years. Ive tried many things and nothing works, so I settled on communicating my own limitations with my team.

I found this puts the responsibility of reaching me into someone else's hands, which relieves pressure on me.

I set expectations on the best ways to reach me:
- Scheduling a meeting or calling me on teams is the best way to reach me
- Ping me directly if you need a timely response
- Text me if you need an immediate response
- Email is best for recording things that happened, like meeting notes, not getting questions answer d
- Email is not a good way to reach me
- I also put a note in my email signature to call or text if you need an urgent response

In short, id coach my team on how to best reach you, and hold to those boundaries when they are broken.

Good luck to you and hope this helps!

I cannot handle keeping emails in "conversation mode." I remove that option to ensure that each reply is sent to me as a separate email. Yes, more emails, but less missed info.

Use the flag/pin functions in outlook strategically. If it’s something I should follow up on, I flag it. If it’s also something on my to do list, I pin it. I set up saved searches to quickly filter those categories and other custom labels I’ve set up.

The onslaught of emails/chats is truly the worst for any person but esp those with adhd. I don’t have a perfect system but these help.

Oh also I turned off the popup and badge number notifications. I still get sounds but I’m not inundated with countless visual pings. That does help reduce the anxiety of it all. I make sure to check the email/teams screen every 10-15 min or so.

It’s unreasonable to expect an instantaneous reply, imo. So I just periodically check in.

Also this one works for my situation but I use one note to jot down my items for the day. It may be duplicitive of my inbox but that’s fine, it helps me remember. (I also need to reference certain emails with links to our routing system to move items forward). I use my running list to keep track of who I’ve delegated what work to, extra context/timing for tasks, etc.

The core belief that has freed me from email jail is this:

✨ Nothing truly important comes in an email. ✨

If someone needs me to know a thing in email, they will tell me some other way.
If my input is needed, the sender will get in touch.

I have absolutely declared email bankruptcy and just Marked All as Read and fully ignored hundreds of emails. No one even noticed I didn't respond or comment, or performed some Productivity Theatre.

My boss assigns projects with unclear expectations and provides no guidance on how to achieve them.

I've asked for help, and, to avoid a long post, she expects me to figure it out. Perhaps you go through this too, but when I don't have a clear guide on completing big projects, it paralyzes me because I don't know where to start. On top of that, I have anxiety, so "it has to be perfect".

How do you approach projects when your boss plays the "guess what's in my head" game?

Anyone a manager? I’m recently diagnosed (26F) and I can’t help but beat myself up everytime I fall short of my to do list. Makes me feel like a huge disservice to my team. Sometimes I ignore, procrastinate or simply other more urgent things come up to increase the delay. Also I work with 3 managers in my team which doesn’t help with expectations nor guidance. Any tips pls?
