Advice needed. I’m hiring a new manager and being told that I am able to offer compensation that is well above what I made in the role and equal to the compensation initially offered when I was promoted to a senior mgr. I already knew I was underpaid and this just provides further confirmation. I’m feeling undervalued. Do I search elsewhere and leave a job I like because I know my worth and don’t think I’ll ever reach my full earning potential or am I letting my pride/ego get the best of me?

In order to boost your salary you’d most likely need to go elsewhere.

Sadly loyalty and staying at a company doesn’t pay and this is an all too common occurrence.

Incoming hires are making more than current employee. You can leverage this for a salary adjustment.

My two coworkers did and got a large raise and promotion. Then a year later got 20k retention bonus.

That being said, advocate for yourself! Make your case with solid figures backing up your performance highlights and worth. If they don't see your value, it's time to find a company who does...ideally one with a more progressive approach to compensation. 😉 Good luck!

Thank you for the thoughtful response. I really appreciate your insight!

Hi there! Situations like these are why I love my job and simultaneously, what makes it so challenging. If I was brought in to a scenario like this, I would immediately bring to light the potential for pay compression. If you don't know what that is, it's when a manager and one of their direct reports have pay that is closer together than it should be, particularly when you factor in the challenges that come with leading a team. (Part 1 of 2)

(Part 2) I would immediately suggest that the hiring manager receive an additional bump to avoid this situation, and also to look at their position in their pay range with fresh eyes. Are they still where we would expect them to be in range, or does that need to be reassessed? In this scenario, I would likely be advocating hard for an increase for you. I'm sorry you're in this situation. For what it's worth, I don't get the impression that a lot of line managers do this intentionally.

Do you want to perpetuate the undervaluation of the role? I would hire at the highest salary you can offer! Why undercut someone as your first action as their boss?

Yeah, stinky that you didn't get paid more back then but ow you have some leverage to make even more going forward.

like

Was definitely never considering bringing them in lower, the role warrants the pay and they are worth it. I don’t believe that my bosses will be open to any sort of negotiation as a result which is where I am struggling. Sort of like “you weren’t willing to pay me that when I asked so why now?” I’m worried that my loyalty is being taken advantage of which is unfortunate because I truly do enjoy working for them. I’m just having a hard time knowing that I’m worth more, and they know it.

So I just thought about this.

You are ABLE to offer doesn’t mean you have to offer a higher salary. Is what you’re making align with the market

Recruiter for big tech company reached out on LinkedIn about a role. I asked about ballpark compensation numbers and they said they’re only comfortable sharing on a live call. Replied that I often receive LinkedIn offers for roles of paycuts around 30-50% so I want to make sure we’re in the same rough range. Recruiter again said she would only share via live call. Is this a red flag?

Hi Fishes, Have a query. My spouse is working in the electrical and electronics field for the last 15years, in various GCC countries. Now he wishes to come back to India and wants to join some company here. But seems like similar opportunities are very less, say close to 3-4%. What is your opinion if he takes a DevOps course and do a career change ? What will be the % of getting interviews ? Even if he gets selected, how much will he get?

Hi Everyone. I completed my 1 year in EY in October 2022. And in my profile, they have updated it to Senior Analyst now. But that was a progression that happens every year and I have not received the incremented salary.

Now that they are giving increments to everyone, will I receive both progression and increment or my progression will be counted as increment.

Highly confused.

Asking for wife who's also in banking. If she got ~$100k in signing bonus in 2019 for 1 year commitment in CA and started FT in July 2020, assuming she leaves before July 2021, can her employer claw back full amount in California? Some say it's much tougher to do so under CA law but wonder if anyone has any insights. Banks won't likely care about analyst signing bonuses, but associate bonus at EB with diversity bonus can be significant. If she quits before, she won't be going to another bank.
