How long is it recommended to stay in a role so it doesn’t look like job hopping?
I would like to continually increase my income, but 3% merit increases don’t cut it.

I'd say at least a year, but I think a potential employer will understand perfectly well if you left for higher salary potential

like

Is everything else at your company/job solid? Just the pay the bothers you? In that case, be careful of following the dollars. A 10% increase isn't worth it if you end up with lousy coworkers, a toxic boss, etc. Instead, see what you can do to earn a bigger raise or a bonus.

If there are other reasons, then I'd say 18 months is a good target. Anything over a year is acceptable (makes it look like you tried); 2 years is ideal for reasons someone else already stated.

like

Thank you for this. Yes, company and job is okay. I don’t feel challenged in my work. I think my current company is great but they don’t have any structure or framework for promoting and growing in HR. What I’m understanding is that if you’re good at your job, they want you to continue that same job.

I think job hopping isn’t too much of a concern these days. The occasional short stint isn’t a huge deal and 1-2 years is pretty common. If you have a long string of jobs you’ve been at for only 6 months that starts to look a bit odd, but in this market recruiters get it that people switch jobs for various reasons or get headhunted away with competitive offers, but do be prepared to explain your career history and why you moved. Think about what else is important to you aside from money when considering making a move and be prepared to speak to that. Often moving jobs is what is needed to get (sometimes significantly) more than that 3%.

I’ve heard 2 years to get a good sample size and make a significant impact before moving on. I’ve also heard 18 months. Interested to hear what others have to say though, because you’re right. I like to drop a line in the water a couple times a year to see if there is more out there than small merit raise or none at all.

like

I've also heard 18 months but would personally recommend 2 years.

I think it depends on where you are in your career... if earlier in your career then I'd even suggest to make a move every 1.5 to 2 years, be it internally or externally, for learning experiences and exposure to different ways of working.

I think less than a year may raise eyebrows, but you can explain anything as long as there are valid reasons. Its all about how you frame it, so just make sure to put some thought into that.

like

Thank you. I am early in my career and I moved into my current role out for exposure and it has worked out well. I’m trying to gauge how much exposure is needed

3-5 yrs

You would stay at a company for 3 years with merit increases? Or should promotions be be factored in?

like

I would say at least a year or two. But honestly speaking, my personal standard is at least 6 months, to determine if a company is a great fit for me.

I think a minimum of two years is a good time to gather enough experience and could reflect stability. Personally, I observe this.

I am in a long distance relationship with someone who is currently in B school. He spends pretty much all his breaks and holidays traveling with his classmates. Most of the time I am fine. But for some important holidays and my birthday, I told him we should spend time together. He just said it’s more important for him to bond with his classmates and ignore my ask. It’s really disappointing and I don’t know what else to tell him. Is that a reasonable ask or am I being dramatic?

Recently accepted a temp role as an HR admin for a former employer. Previously interned there & left because my supervisor did not have any growth opportunities planned out for me; this was in spite of my stellar performance, as reflected in my 90 day review. She has since left the company, but there’s crazy turnover in the company & in the HR department in particular. Just that an HR coordinator resigned. We have sales people in Canada and the US, the Canadians make 150K CAD and down here it’s 150K USD, the Canadians argue they should be making 30% more than the US colleagues to be equal bc of the exchange! I explain the salary is dependent on the market data for them in Canada, WHERE THEY LIVE, and you can’t compare it to the US employees and the market data down here. Overall they are both in the 75th% for total comp. for their industry. Am I wrong?
