Bain & Company I’m a PhD student looking to start in consulting and am looking to connect with other PhD/ADP consultants that went into consulting to learn more about the experience and how to prep for case interviews coming from a non-business background. Especially looking for advice on McKinsey & Company, Boston Consulting Group, and Bain & Company

It seems like you weren’t at the second one for very long so I would automatically think they laid off most recent hires. Don’t get down on yourself! You’ve already found a new job this year and you will find another one.
It’s getting the best of you. Anyone who works in the industry understands that layoffs happen to almost everyone at some point in their career and it’s the risk of agency life. The best thing to do is get ahead of it in your interviews and mention why (assuming a large client left, consolidation or some other event to cause it) so it’s clear it wasn’t performance related at all. Don’t let it get in your head and keep the faith. 👌
Same thing happened to me. Laid off from one company, took another gig at a startup that lost funding. Nobody is going to think you were the problem. My layoffs didn’t close any doors and was never an issue. Best of luck!
If you haven’t been laid off, you’re not in advertising! If it’s a short stint, just delete it from your resume or put it under freelance.
The real answer is both. Bias can’t help but creep in when companies see that in your history. But, your job is to sell yourself in spite of that. And that’s how they’ll know you’re worth it.
