The stakes are wildly different. If my team lead is off their game or whiffs on a new pitch by taking their eye off the PowerPoint deck for 1/100th of a second because they were mentally distracted and can’t regain their focus, it doesn’t lead to a snapped vertebrae.
Not Everyone have the privilege to say, STOP, My well being is important. Mental health is not just for athletes, the stress and pressure I have at my work has been challenging, if I step back from a project I am running, I may not have a job. Overall, I commend SB, making that decision must have been hard, her action is inspirational, it may have future consequences but her health is more important. She is an awesome gymnast, she will bounce back😊. You know what, me too…Is KPMG hiring?
I got off my McK engagement mid project due to severe anxiety. My HR, EM, Partner were ALL supportive.
They understood that my health was more important than the study.
They also understood that having me perform half ass was prolly not best for client so dropping me mid way and potentially picking up someone else was optimal too
SA2 - how did she impact her country? We are talking about sports here. Does the US not winning gold actually affect anyone’s day to day lives in this country? Way to be dramatic, jeez.
Saw a gymnast share this:

If she messed up, she would end up dead or paralyzed. Not the same thing as throwing a ball around.
Also if you are off your game in football or basketball, the coach can take you out and put you in during the 4th quarter. There’s no pause button in gymnastics.
Her teammates didn’t sound upset. So why should any of us be?

I said they struggled and was left in a tough situation. Didn’t say they didn’t perform. They obv fought back hard as much as they can so I very much appreciate them!
I can see a lot more of this coming with mentally inept gen z-ers

PM1 - your comment makes it seem like you think despite her own assessment otherwise, she was obligated - meaning, she should have competed no matter what - despite the risks. Do you understand gymnastics enough to make this kind of determination?
Incredibly disrespectful to compare this to consulting work or another other athlete. I’m not sure anyone could relate to the pressure and mental health exhaustion she may be feeling. If she’s not mentally prepared to complete her routine, she may wind up paralyzed or with the inability to ever compete again due to severe injury. On top of that, she was sexually abused and assaulted by her team doctor for YEARS...we have no idea what she may be going through. She’s put her own health and interest on the line for her team multiple times. I hope if some of y’all had team members going through an extremely stressful time, you’d have the compassion to support them even if they “peace out in the middle of a deadline”.
Sometimes it is better to remove yourself from the situation, than to self-destruct.
Not only self destruct but negatively affect others as well

You have no idea. Any business analogy is laughable. Even sports comparison, especially sports not played with the weight of the nation behind, pales in comparison.

She didn’t walk away from anything. She saved herself from what could’ve been a disastrous situation with lifelong consequences from injury.
Bad take.
She carries an unbelievable amount of trauma and responsibility that none of us can ever begin to comprehend. I applaud her decision.
I mean she did her first jump and messed up. So obviously her mental health was affecting performance. She may have continued to mess up or could severely injure herself. All for a stupid medal everyone will forget about in 8 years.
Will never not be amused by people who sit at home on their couch and judge the personal health and safety decisions of the greatest athletes in the world (and of all time) who have devoted their lives to the sport. Do you think she trained full time professionally for five years (and her whole life) to not win every gold she possibly could?

You sound like a real joy to work with. Good to know you’d put a PowerPoint presentation ahead of your colleague’s mental health. Remember: mental health issues can quickly become physical health issues, relational health issues, and even life/death issues. Your campaign launch for a new line of toilet paper will be just fine, I promise.

I liked most veterans I worked with.
A good leader can see when they are hurting rather than helping their team. They know how to put aside their ego and step back for the good of the team. Simone didn’t “peace out” of anything. She clearly weighed all options and trusted her team enough to perform without her.
Yes!! she left for her team so they could win a medal. She knew if she stayed she might ruin their chances of medaling at all.
Simone has always been known for her air awareness, it’s why she can throw the biggest skills in the world. The fact that she got “lost in the air” on her vault - one she had been able to do seemingly effortlessly for years - is extremely worrying. She made the same mistake in warm-ups for the vault, so it was not a one-off thing. Gymnasts can suddenly lose their air awareness for a variety of reasons, including stress. It’s called the twisties in gymnastics & it’s similar to the yips in other sports, but much more dangerous. It’s usually not something that can be overcome quickly, it can take weeks or months & sometimes gymnasts have to start back at the absolute basics to overcome it.
This. Having a block is challenging in any sport, and can take a long time to overcome, but it’s especially dangerous in gymnastics.
You’re completely right. They’d receive hell for doing this on an engagement haha
Rat people? 😱
Honestly, Simone owes no one anything. You want her to perform at her best but won’t allow her to be her best because she is too good for others to catch. So you penalize her but want her to be ok with it. Hell yeah that plays with your mental. So you know what, step aside. I am all for what she did. Why should she feel so much pressure to be the star when her star is not rewarded accordingly. Take care of your mental.
Pro
My main suspicion is that it’s not really mental health. She just couldn’t take it when she didn’t finish the vault beautifully and claimed it’s mental health issue. If it’s truly mental health problem, she could’ve quit earlier aka before final even happened.

Like EM1 said, she did a 1.5 by accident instead of a 2.5 twist and still managed to land upright. She knew something was wrong and did the smart thing for her own safety and for her teams’ chances of medaling.
Well. Clearly there’s a lot of people who don’t support her decision, like you, just like there would be for Brady or what not.
Who cares though? Neither Biles nor LeBron owe you or me anything. Their teammates would be disappointed, the bosses would be too, but we have no say and no stake. Not really. What you’re saying though is that mental health is not as important as physical health (because no one would complain if Brady couldn’t play due to a torn hamstring or a concussion), and that because you can’t “see” the problem you’re entitled to judge someone. Yeah, no. I posit the people that support Biles today would also support another athlete, whether that’s gymnastics or running after a ball.
I’ve had to take mental leave in the middle of a project as a person in charge. My team and superiors were very understanding, and it helped me get better. If you can’t support someone struggling, no matter who they are, the problem is all on you.
