The Sound and the Fury
I didn't "hate" it per say- but I was really kind of bad at it. Never was able to see the symbols or themes. I was a very black and white literal thinker until college. I tell my students this often as a means for encouragement. I could always read well, I just couldn't really get any deeper meaning out of it.
The Great Gatsby. This might have been because I was too stoned that year to get it, although looking back I probably should’ve had more of a connection to the inebriated characters. I’ve read it many times now, even in French. Still not my favorite.
I couldn’t stand Gatsby. I only read part of it in high school, I tried again in college, and yet again later in life. I started teaching at 37 y.o. And fell in love the first time I taught it.
I hated reading until 9th grade. I stumbled on a series of books that caught my interest. Between that and an excellent 9th grade ELA teacher I was able to discover a love of reading. Can't really say any "classics" are things I despise, but I do love teaching "The Lottery"
Catcher in the Rye
I didn’t ever hate reading, but I wasn’t a fan of most mandated reading. I couldn’t get into Of Mice of Men as a high school sophomore, but now I love it and love teaching it to my freshmen.
I did all the required reading, but I was far more motivated to lose myself in a Stephen King novel. I lost interest in his work when I entered college (early 80's) but I just finished reading Under the Dome, and now I'm hooked again.
