Why would anyone pay US salary outside the US?
OP - if you’re employed in the US, there are some tax implications to living abroad. My understanding (not a legal opinion of course) is that you can do it for upto 6 months without an issue but beyond that it becomes tricky from a legal standpoint. Now if you are employed abroad in an international office of the company, then you should, of course, expect to make the same salary as your peers in that office. There’s no reason to overpay you, and it would also be a discriminatory practice for the company.
Bottom line - it is not solely up to the companies to give a shit or not. There are issues with tax and other regulations which make it difficult, though perhaps not impossible. That said, if anyone knows of any exceptions to this, please do let us all know.
Get a US job that let’s you work remote from anywhere. Strikeout critical thinking from your resumé.
So condescending smh.
Zuckerberg said he would adjust salaries for those moving outside of Silicon Valley. That being said I think (hope) there may be changes and increased flexibility for remote work. I heard of some companies having “post-adjustments” where they have a standard base salary, and then an addition based on where in the world they are located. I also think (hope) that this won’t cause a race to the bottom. Can you keep salaries that low and attract talent? https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.ft.com/content/1c52a7a2-aa65-11ea-abfc-5d8dc4dd86f9
That being said, I can think of a handful of friends who have made the move back to south Europe (home country) for quality of life and taken big salary cuts.
*Long-term for me means 1-3 years
Hilarious. Let us know how that works out. 😉
Making a US salary, over seas, long term... add in this environment and that’s not gonna be easy. What’s the business need?
