It would be difficult. While 100-130 an hour may sound good on paper when you factor in the taxes, lost benefits (retirement and insurance) I don’t see how you would come out ahead especially only working 8 months of the year.

I think I want to take the plunge. I’m a married mom with 2 kids so I can get benefits through my husband. I financially can take a slight haircut in annual salary and want to work 6-8 months a year to have summers off with the kids (but make more than a teacher).

Thanks for the vote of confidence!! I want to be more dedicated and family focused. What you describe is what I want. I’ve looked hard for part time cpa jobs but they are a 🦄. I hope this will give my family more of what we need without sacrificing all the income and career progression
🤔 Teaching maybe a good option.
Following: I’ve always considered this as well!
Yes.. Good deal as long as it works out. Try it out yourself. You will never know until you try. Risk is surely high, but I have friends and my spouse who have been doing it. It comes at the cost of mental peace coz somewhere you may lose certainty and such times can stress you out. It mostly depend on the kind of contract you get to work with. So, do your homework well in advance. Good luck!
Possible, yes. Had a former colleague do that. However, keeping it sustainable is very difficult, since clients will need you on their schedule.
If you do it right and build up your own practice, maybe you can do that in a few years when you have a team working for you.
But as a single shingle, that’s very difficult to sustain.

If your at B4 you may want to check with your firm to see if they will allow you to work a reduced schedule. It would obviously reduce your pay but if your in good standings I’ve seen many people do this over the years. I’ve seen people do blocks of time off as well as a reduced weekly hours worked.

Big fat no bueno. 80% of pay gets you a 40 hour work week 😞 and that’s a temp arrangement only.
Don’t do B4 and get a corporate 9-5. Do that first and see if you like it. Honestly I think consultants are either 100% work or no work lol. There is an inbetween.
I did this last year (mom of 2, same situation with hubby with benefits). It definitely has provided greater flexibility which is what I wanted. I make my own schedule and work as little or much as I want. As others have mentioned, you have to figure out the “next” and go get the work. It is not all sunshine and roses. Sometimes you end up working more and that sucks. But you are in control of your own destiny, and that is awesome. Good luck!
How you are treated as an independent varies greatly - some think they can dump everything on you and some clients and their org will not share anything making it a very volatile experience both financially and nature of work. More women doing this might help get it more traction and credibility
