Just pick a cheap dry red... don't waste money on a good wine to ruin it by heating and adding stuff to it

A Syrah usually works really well (also great for sangria) and Yellowtail is a stupidly good value. I found super-dry reds (I got a great price in a couple cases of Domaine de la Janasse, a Cote du Rhône that was ho-hum on its own) work incredibly well mulled.
I think overall you want to go for strong flavor profiles. Mouthfeel will be doctored up well by the honey and heat so you don’t have to spend a lot for texture. But thinner light-and-fruity reds like Pinot Noir and Cab Franc get killed and you just end up tasting alcohol.
Cheap Bordeaux should do the trick
Strongly disagree with just getting cheapest. As a norther European with long traditions of glühwein or some variations, a few thing to keep in mind:
- quality matters, just like it does with a good cocktail (don’t use cheapest wine or spirit)
- go for a big/bold red wine that will hold op to getting a bit of heat. Old world Merlot tends to be good.
- don’t let it get above 160F. Use a thermometer.
Can't beat the value of Argentine Malbecs or Chilean cabs for that treatment. And as someone said earlier, the Australian Yellow Tail varieties.
