Not self promoting here… but feel free to follow me on Vivino. I have been adding quite a few ratings there for ones I like!
Bordeaux is good value for money, is dry and has a slight bitterness. Go with Left Bank
‘Bitter’ isn’t a thing really. If you’re looking of tannic but not that heavy, go for Nebbiolo (Barolo barbaresco anything from piedmonte) or a cab franc. Don’t do a Bordeaux.. French cab savs are tricky. You should also consider an Aussie cab sav (try coonawarra).
If you like American, try storypoint or juggernaut - both sub 20 and great wines! (Not as tannic as Nebbiolo but heavier)
Petit Verdot is quite awesome but hard to find 100% pv
Look for wines with high percentages of petit verdot. I find that varietal is heavy on a bitter flavor that I’m not a fan of, but others love in Cabernet-style blends. It’s popular in many of the flagship Napa reds.
Look for carignan and tannat grape varieties. Also, if you see a Madiran designation, give it a try.
I won’t plug a specific wine subscription box but bottles within are usually of high quality and sold for $20-ish each so that’s been a good way to explore new wines!
