Can you elaborate on horror stories? Appreciate the responses
I interviewed with them a couple of years ago, but didn't take the offer. Just got a bad feeling from the place. I interviewed and spoke with partners only. They never gave me the opportunity to talk with other managers to find out about the day-to-day operations.
Stay away. I've only heard horror stories.
Colleague was an MBA intern and worked atrocious hours. Would consistently leave well after midnight and sometimes after sunrise. Worked most weekends too. Many people don't make it more than a year.
I've heard others allude to similar things but that was the most detail I'd been given
Very curious where you are hearing these things. I work probably 50 a week on average but there are definitely peaks
They have fractional staffing models. Imagine 4 different managers asking for Delivarbales by EOD
Interviewed with them and had a really bad vibe. The HR person was so disorganized and the person I interviewed with was so unenthusiastic about their job there...
Fractional staffing is indeed tough at ZS. However, if you can survive ZS as a business consultant for 2 years - you can do well in pretty much any consulting firm I believe. Work can get very intense and OP is right in saying many people who do get counseled out are within first 2 years. I like working here because I figured out how to manager and do well in a year. I used to work 60-70 hours average and now it's 50.. (no weekends) with amazing teams.
What's ZS's bread and butter? Also, how does pay compare?
ZS is 80% pharma and consultants base salary usually start start around 130k for MBA hires.
@zs2 So MBA plus 1.5 years what can I expect? I'm getting married soon, in a tough position of never wanting to leave her side and never wanting to provide less, currently at 140 and probably getting promoted to Mgr if I don't do anything too stupid.
@EY - I'd hope you make at least 140k if not more - Glassdoor should give you the entire range. I think consultant base can go up as high as 166k
@a2, sucks you got a bad vibe. Because of limited travel, our offices do tend to have their own cultures and experience can vary based on who you are working with. Fractional staffing is one of the biggest complaints about the firm. Also OP, manager at ZS has greater responsibilities than at other firms. You start becoming responsible for selling
Really appreciate all of the responses. Seems like non-zs people think it's rough and zs people think it's okay. Why are you wonderful bastards so rational? Just decide my life for me damn it
@EY OP - ZS is known for a tough culture for newbies esp. if you are not homegrown. You need to learn how ZS works quickly. Consultant life is tough so if you are willing to work hard the first year, your good reputation will pay off as the time goes on.
What is fractional staffing? Part time on projects?
Fractional staffing = stay away. Have heard multiple MBA classmates echo the work life balance stance and leave. @Z1 are you junior / pre MBA?
No
I have worked for ZS and another very large consulting company. The work life balance is not too different. However, fractional staffing makes it challenging until you figure it out. The key is either to work with same group of people or same client/same type project with different people. Some sort of consolidation. The culture and people were way better than my other large employer.merit based competency model actually works as advertised. It pays reasonable well and still somewhat keeps the small firm atmosphere.
