Valid reasons for leaving. I would say just be clear on your priorities and cognisant about the realities of the role you want to go to. Seen quite a few people who have gotten higher pay, better hours but stuck with a poor team or a terrible line manager (that they can’t get rid of) - and end up being equally unhappy.
Definitely tons of great and better opportunities outside of consulting, but I find some people romanticise it in the same way many of us did to consulting before we joined
That's a really good point. I had a mentor remind me that I need to really get to know the people and the team because you can't just roll off. So I'll take that into deep consideration as I feel it out. Thank you!
Before you exit (from someone who already did) make sure you drill through this to isolate the specific root causes of why you want to leave. Ask yourself this:
If travel stopped, and all other aspects of your job stayed the same, would you be completely happy in your present career and role?
What else could change that would make you enjoy the current role, including travel?
Thank you! Really good questions to consider. I think initially I was running away from travel. But its forged into wanting to run towards something that will grow my skills in areas that I feel the firm is a few years from being mature on.
I'd want a specialized local role and I don't see it coming any time soon in my region without getting the experience in industry. Honestly, I almost feel I need to force this to resnap local and possibly boomerang after I build my specialized experience and network.
Agreed with both points above.
I left to industry 3 years ago due to travel l. Had a real 9-5 desk job at a top tier bank. After a year I was bored and unmotivated. My wife convinced me to go back to consulting.
Been back about 8 months now.
Yeah definitely; should I decide to leave PwC I will have both the bank I was at and PwC on my resume it’s all about the building blocks for the future
I can relate! I joined fishbowl because I feel as a traveling consultant you are pretty much on your own. So it’s nice to see other people have the same stressors as I do.
Another thought - it depends on your priorities - and on what type of specialised content you have in mind. I also know a few people who were tired of traveling / churn of projects but ended up travelling the same if not more in their new industry role - simply because it was the topic/role content that they found interesting.
I left consulting for 9 months and went into industry. I only lasted 9 months before I wanted to come back to consulting but that’s more of a personal experience. I think, if we’ll managed and well chosen, industry can be very rewarding too. The type of role is very important, as are the people you work with. Once you find these two, it is worth considering going to industry.
