As silly as this may sound, the culture.
My time at EY was great from a growth and people development experience. There were some in leadership that were less pleasant than others, but I felt that people cared about my development and gave helpful feedback for me to grow/learn. It was a very positive and fun place. Little things - like thanking me for putting time in a project and giving me honest feedback - were frequent.
Deloitte has a better brand but the culture and people were dramatically different from EY. Working and killing your self for a project was expected and if you didn’t do it, you could count on the person above you to make your life hell. However, that was the same for every person above them as well...it just was a very toxic and high pressure environment that put individual growth and needs at the very bottom of the list. The lack of transparency with scatterplots and excessive favoritism further amplified this.
Overall, this is just my experience. It probably is very dependent on your practice and project teams. However I will say my time at EY flew by whereas the time at D was slow and painful.
So true with Deloitte
I’m interviewing with EY soon. This has made my decision so much easier.
I’m Facebook friends with everyone from EY & no one from Deloitte
The office location
LAH-MF-AAOOOOO
I have had more people trying to backstab me at Deloitte.
I have coworkers at Deloitte who have dealt with this A LOT.
I went from Deloitte to EY and I remember before I left everyone at Deloitte was like “why would you go to a worse company”... I knew the brand wasn’t as strong but throughout interviews I had really really like the people that had interviewed me from EY.
The culture at EY suits me more and I’m happier here (won’t point those fingers, I’ll just say it suits ME more!). It’s more inclusive and understanding. Sometimes it’s a bit too much and I miss a bit more clarity, like in Deloitte where you can just say it how it is. But at the end of the day the underlying values at EY align much more to mine. The type of projects are not dissimilar but I find EY a bit more global. I have experienced tough situations in both, but the leadership and HR have been much more supportive at EY - I’m based in London, though, so can’t comment for US.
I’d say they definitely each suit different personality types and it’s great to have both so we can all work where it suits us best 🙃
EY is definitely very global, which is a big plus for me.
@D5 talk about pot calling the kettle black. Why not share your opinion, if different instead of pointing fingers as well 🙄😒
I was younger at Deloitte than EY, I will say being a senior at both there was more cushion at EY where people helped and didn't throw you under the bus. However groups and cultures shift over time. I think there is no one correct answer - but will say looking across the experiences most people i knew at D have moved on, while at EY more have stayed.
I have had coworkers who mentioned the work life balance was worse at Deloitte but the quality of work was better. Is this true?
I know what you meant. Im glad Im not the only female to feel this and have talked to some of my other female colleagues and they sometimes feel this way
I’m a very friendly, chatty, confident woman though fairly junior and get told not to be so “sensitive” to what some of the guys have done or said to me. Which sometimes I think is borderline bullying/harassment and never had these concerns as frequently at EY. The few times something did happen at EY leadership swooped in.
The constant need for those at your rank, older or more experienced consultant male consultants, even in leadership to have the women on there team validate them or stroke there ego is annoying. Also was in a leadership meeting with one female SM and the rest M PPMD and was told the personalities in the room probably wouldn’t allow me to speak (I barely spoke 10 words b/c I couldn’t get anything out, only really spoke to the only other female in the room). They would even interrupt her.....
Again not saying all the males I’ve worked with have been horrible (some I love and will
consider life long friends and EY has plenty of toxic males)However, some of them have been very toxic. The Inflated Egos, Insecurity, and Aggression shown by my colleagues is an unnecessary combo.
Had a few cases where a male colleague has had to step in and tell another male colleague that the way he was treating/addressing me was uncalled for after I told them the same thing myself.
Though my practice area is very male dominated, high burn, and probably attracts more of the aggressive types b/c of the work
